Why do SD channels still exist? (4music etc)

It’s not in the Freeview HD standard, so unless you’re will to pay for the millions of tuners that won’t support it (or be the channel that is only receivable through a non-branded subsection of Freeview HD receivers) then MPEG2 or H.264 are your only options.

where is MPEG2 still being used aside from freeview SD? I thought all virgin SD channels were now at least using MPEG4 since they retired the V+ boxes from the estate.

Doesn't Virgin have fair bit of excess capacity though or are they sacrificing TV bandwidth to squeeze more broadband out of the coax?

Also SD Sky boxes, until they are officially phased out over the next year. In fact where isn't it, other than Virgin Media (who have unusual levels of control over the entirety of the broadcast/network/receiver setup), is probably the better question.
