News themes that refuse to die
#1

As the single BBC News channel looms, some had hope for a change in the Lowe theme, which was assumed to stay afterwards. This made me think about themes that have the same logevity as the BBC's, if not longer. This is a thread to appreciate them:

Kicking start, a home example: TVB News. The beeps had been in use since the 70s, as the Morse Code for "News Today". Current iteration, in use since 1996, is a witness to multiple graphics, studio and editorial changes to the newsroom:

Any other examples?

In Greece, ERT (the state broadcaster) has been using their news intro since 1982.

Firstly, on ET1 (from 1982 - 1997) then on NET (from 1997 - 2008) then from 2008 onwards, on all channels (EPT ΕΙΔΗΣΕΙΣ got its own identity as part of the 2008 Red Bee Media rebrand).

There was a brief period (between 2013 - 2015) where the music wasn't used. This was because the then government closed down ERT and replaced it with ΔΤ (public television) and then NERIT.

From 2015, it's been back in use, loud and proud...

Funnily enough that was also the first example I thought of! HK (and TVB in particular) seems to love sticking to a theme once they like it.

This is the Financial Report from 1991, I don't quite know when it's from (1986 had a different theme for sure), and today you can still enjoy the same tune on TV!

And 10 years later in 2013!

And not quite 10 years later in 2021, but they still use the same theme today!

Meanwhile Good Morning Hong Kong's theme has stayed the same ever since they swapped from a magazine to a news-heavy format.

That shift in format happened in 1993...

This is a well known one, of course, but the German Tagesschau has been using the same theme since 1956. That's 67 years!

There have been some strange versions along the way, e.g. this "very Nineties" rendition:

Italy has a theme that's even older, at 69 years. Public broadcaster Rai launched the Telegiornale in 1954 and the same melody is still in use today:

Here in Brazil, TV Globo has been using "The Fuzz", in many variations, as the theme for its main evening newscast, Jornal Nacional (the first nationally-broadcast television newscast in the country, and still the most-watched) since it first aired, in 1969:

The previous version of the theme has been in regular use for 28 years, between 1989 and 2017 (being the longest-running version of it):

And the current version, despite being used on a regular basis since 2017, was first used in 2002 or so, for major news events, such as the US-led attacks on Afghanistan, presidential inaugurations (such as when Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was first sworn in as president, in 2003):

...and announcements of the new Pope (like this 2013 video from when Francis was announced as the Pope):

Over at Band, the theme for its main evening news, Jornal da Band, has been in use since 2005:

It was first refreshed in 2007, when the broadcast switched to HD (being, with RedeTV! News, one of the first national newscasts in Brazil to be broadcast in high definition):

And got a new version in 2010, which has been in use ever since:

1 News in New Zealand has used a version of the same theme since the 90s:

Surprised no one mentioned Philadelphia's ABC O&O station's "Move Closer to Your World". That station has been using MCTYW for its Action News since 1970~

May I raise the various ITN / ITV News themes. Originally sourced from The Awakening by Johnny Pearson and then exploited by Dave Hewson and Bill Baylis for the more modern variants.

Circa 1995:

Circa 2006:

and bringing it reasonably up to date

Circa 2013:

So there has been a theme that has been going far longer than Lowe's BBC News themes.

Ahhh, this wonderful piece was also used by I believe Euronews from the ITN era though I can't find an example. Where are you @itsrobert ?
