Trace Hits will close on Thursday

Trace Hits will close on Thursday at 12am, leaving Trace Vault the only Trace owned music channel on-air.

Not really surprised by this, seeing as the trace brand never really took off anyway and the channels seem to suffer from various glitches more often than not.

What I don't understand is why Trace took the approach of buying a group of existing music channels rather than just launching their own? They almost immediately binned everything off which they'd bought (except The Vault) and moved to a different playout system.

It's not like Sky EPG slots are a scarce resource any more!

It seems Vault is staying at the minute, however if they are closing down their main channel, maybe a name change? Or maybe they could make Vault into an entertainment channel, as it airs Power Rangers and Kenan and Kel, etc.

The Vault name does work for those kind of shows though, given that they're archive material and not recent stuff (the Power Rangers they have is the original series Mighty Morphin - the newer stuff is on Pop - and both that and Kenan and Kel are from the 90s).

It closed this morning. There was no fanfare, the channel was removed from the EPG and then switched off moments later.

The days of channels going out in a blaze of glory have passed. Channels launch quietly and close quietly these days.
Wouldn't be surprised if it was just a case of finish the programme, run the ident, fade to black, cut the signal and somebody then reconfigures the playout system (or unplugs it if needs be) and then goes to drink some tea.

Isn’t it unusual for a channel to switch off after removal? Normally we see a black screen or in some cases a closure slide.

In the case of Scuzz it cut off mid video to black screen and tone.

No. When ABC1 closed down in September 2007 it did this:
www.youtube.com

It closed at 12pm, and you can see that when a channel closes on Sky, the box dumps you back on Channel 998. From the search and scan banner All traces of ABC1 on Sky were gone in just 13 minutes.

Like I say - no fanfare, no emotion, no "poor us", just air your ident and off you pop.
