In With A Shout was announced November last year whereas Picture Slam was announced this January but someone who worked on the pilot of the latter talked about it before anything was announced.

I quite enjoyed Picture Slam… easy to play along with, Alan is an amusing host but it felt a bit clunky at times. Picking the numbers in certain rounds led to a few second delay in the picture reveals? Never noticed that on a show before
Indeed, it seemed like there was slightly too much delay for the speed of the contestants' answering.

It was most likely kept in storage - they wouldn't destroy a set until they knew the new one was a success - it would be a complete waste of money, something Thames Television wouldn't want to do.

It’s strange for something to go back to using the exact same set as before though. Usually what would happen is they’d try the new one and if after a series they didn’t like it, they’d build one more in line with the original but it would be a new build and still look a bit different.
I’m guessing it’s just a bit of extra dressing on the old set and some lighting changes, so wouldn’t have been too hard to back.
Unless the first of these two series was recorded after the one that was shown second? Seems unlikely but it’s the sort of thing that happens these days?
Perhaps they had to use a different set of studios for one series and it wasn’t that easy to transport the existing set?

You also have to remember when Series 7 aired, 1991 - the year Thames were concentrating on winning their ITV franchise, which meant cost cutting measures in place - if the production felt their new set for Series 6 which aired September 1990 to February 1991 was not what they wanted, Thames would not be prepared to offer them more money to spend on another new set or rebuilding their old one, so a basic economy was used, taking the old set out of storage and sprucing it up a tiny bit.

Well it would cost them money to store sets too. I’d be inclined to think it was more of a redressing, but the stairs below the screens are also different.

Can't really see what was wrong with the gold set - there were far worse sets around at the time.

But it was the same near enough as the later set from Series 7 onwards just in new packaging.
But yes, nobody watched Strike It Lucky for the set, and it could probably be argued nobody watched it for the gameplay either, because the format's wafer thin and the only saving grace was the host milking any comedic value out of anything that happened.
Well either that or it lasted 14 series in two incarnations off the back of the popularity of Michael Barrymore alone. Which wouldn't have been impossible at that time...
Still lasted longer than the original US format by some considerable margin though that isn't saying much:
