Why does summer affect ITV output more?
#1

Yearly when summer arrives (July, August)
Itv outside love island always has this shut down in hibernate mode till September feeling...
All afternoon repeats, added primetime repeats, old films re shown, no stand out shows outside itv2 love island no New drama launched.

All hit dramas and shows on hold till September onwards and slots filled with documentary type shows at 9pm or like doc Martin on Tue nights repeats.

*Know it's summer and adverts pay less as viewers down less TV indoor time but....

Other commercial channels manage summer new show output and new drama look at channel 5 had new drama this summer, even channel 4 added new shows even to breakfast Saturday with big breakfast..

Why does summer July August always effect itv more???

Looking at BBC one and yes license fee funded but look at good ratings on Wednesday night for Shetland in red hot heat outside still rated well most watched show of day outside news output.

Seems itv just gives ratings away in summer giving other channels an easy run outside itvs soap output.

Why???

If channels 4 and 5 manage more new output in this period and BBC with its sport this summer and say Shetland on Wednesday night proved viewers will still watch TV in summer?

*With the future of streaming increasing yearly...and outside say live sport events or event TV channels ratings lower why give rival channels help through the summer to build viewers with shows starting now that will lead through the next month of September making your channel suffer?

Can liner TV channels afford to just limp along when choose now ?
..will the arrival of itvX actually help itv in summer as be more content to switch from itvX to main itv to cover summer ?

With no big sports events next year 2023 BBC ones summer ratings be far lower in comparison to this year...but still it will screen new dramas and more stand out shows and as Shetland proved Wednesday night it brings in ratings.
if channels 4 and 5 make more effort in summer months why is it set in stone itv limps along in July and August every year???

You answered your own question. Makes more sense for the best shows to be on when advertisers are spending more. Hence, more repeats in the summer.

But itv hold back more than any other network that's the point....

Channel 4 and 5 manage more new shows through summer and are commercial networks??. Big viewer numbers in heat wave week for BBC one wed night drama last week and big numbers for all sport output... So why just itv holding back the stand out shows why not deliver a few in summer.

Now BBC one established drama on Wednesday night and new drama starting Sunday and Monday nights get lead in and viewers so harder for itv to launch new shows against them weeks in?

It is the case that they are weak in the summer, but ITV's Saturdays this summer have been some of the worst.

They only had 1 commission, Alan Carr's Epic Gameshow. Last year at this time they had The Void (that admittedly flopped), Rolling In It (now axed) & a new run of Who Wants to be a Millionaire.

I guess a summer of sport, and a return to people holidaying and going out along with other new commissions generally failing resulted in an even worse summer offering than normal. Epic Gameshow (now on repeats) and Bond is quite a low point though.

With the big ratings summer sport has brought the bbc definitely itv should look to gain more rights to summer events as would rate better than current summer output. Bbc2 posting good ratings again this week with sports.

Seems this year more than past summers itv more weak ..even less Saturday night offerings e en Alan carts show was a repeat on Sat... more filler 9pm weeknight shows feel
.. and repeats of doc Martin etc ..

At least for last week of month seems lot of new stuff back
Riley looking good etc .

Wonder if this year been more if a dull summer on itv due to all there focus on launching itvX???

People out and about instead of watching TV is a factor but I think it's also the case that there's less new ideas and formats kicking about and any that do stick tend to have a limited shelf life. I can't see Starstruck lasting for long unless it reformats, Limitless Win may well be another of those Ant and Dec two and out commissions. Ninja Warrior? Will the centres around the country keep it alive because it shouldn't be going by the ratings?

What are those ratings? Let's see some context please.

And don't forget, ratings are down across the board. No show gets as many viewers as even five years ago, streamers have seen to that.

Demographically I feel in time there will be less seasonal variation in ratings. The core audience of linear Tv is becoming people who are at home most days and nights of the year and don’t go out much more just because of the season.

Lower audiences isn't just because of streamers. Shows can't last forever. There are tons of shows airing, some over a decade old, plodding along because the alternative is to replace them new shows that don't land right away, but that can be as much down to the quality and entertainment value of new shows rather than a lack of viewer loyalty or even "ratings are down across the board". The pandemic hastened the decline for shows because people had little option than but to watch them and I dare say it affected their enjoyment too.

Anyway, -1.5m for Ninja Warrior irrespective of what is on BBC1 is pathetic. It got axed for a reason.

There's nothing new about the summer season being full of repeats or stand-ins on recurring daily formats.

I don't know a market which doesn't show repeats or show new commissions that weren't good enough for the autumn/winter tv seasons where there are more viewers.
