RE: 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup - RhysJR - 07-08-2023

Gabby Logan has just said on air that "we will be flying out there (Australia) after the weekend", confirming that the semi-finals and final will be presented onsite on the BBC, the quarterfinals set to be presented from Salford.

By the sounds of it, Alex Scott will be flying out but not Farra Williams.

ABC's 'Media Watch' have been looking at Australia's coverage of the Women's World Cup coverage again this week (07/08/23), this time into why Seven are airing 15 matches free-to-air, while Optus Sport are airing all of the matches on subscription: https://twitter.com/ABCmediawatch/status/1688734673730768897

Not sure if it was last time or 2018 but the plan was similar for a recent men's world cup with SBS just screening one game a day - but the streaming platform couldn't cope so SBS ended up airing them all anyway.

It's rating well for Seven anyhow - highest audience of the year for Monday's game, even beating State of Origin.

I feel they will have to do 3.30 gaps at all tournaments for knockout matches going forward.  Many countires only have one broadcaster for all matches.

I’m assuming had the USA won their group and had they won the second round match they were originally supposed to be playing they would have ended up in that 2am kick off. Instead it’s a horrible kick off time for Spanish and Dutch fans.

Correct, The Netherlands took the US place on seeding so have had three of their five games at 03:00 CEST, which is completely undesirable for them.

NewscastStudio has published this handy visual slideshow of Telemundo's WWC studio in Miami. The studio design is based on Cris Mercado's sets for its daytime variety show hoyDía, but with added stadium-like elements. Located in Telemundo Center (Studio L, their virtual set space), it is mostly used for pre-match and post-match debriefs and analysis, whilst complementing the "roving reporting" in-stadium during matches.

The graphics used by them are a rebadged version of their 2022 World Cup graphics. They also use their custom "Sueño de Campeones" theme music (commissioned for their FIFA tournament coverage) during openers, bumpers and throws to commercial breaks.

Seven's scheduling of the QF round has become very messy for them, as many of the matches clash with their very lucrative AFL rights, which will serve in most cases as lead-out shows. As a result of this, the Japan v Sweden clash will air on 7mate (in Victoria and South Australia) and 7two (in NSW, Queensland and WA). The choice of 7two might sound strange at first sight, but historically has served as an overflow channel for sport channel in the case Seven and 7mate have already full commitments in their schedules.

Afterwards, AFL coverage scheduling (including pre-game shows) will be altered to allow the 6pm news to air in full in each market, but match scheduling will be still spread in a regional basis (VIC/SA have matches on 7, whilst the rest of states get them on 7mate). Only on Saturday Seven in Western Australia will breakaway from coverage of Carlton v Melbourne to air the WA derby (West Coast v Fremantle). AFL daytime matches (including regionalised Saturday and Sunday afternoon matches) will air as normal, but with altered scheduling to fit the WWC matches Seven will air (ESP v NED and ENG v COL are exclusive to Optus). According to Seven's Sport manager Lewis Martin:

Quote:“Like the rest of Australia, Seven is right behind the Matildas and we have worked closely with the AFL to adjust bounce times for certain games on Saturday to ensure no one misses a minute of what will be a massive night for both women’s football and AFL,” he said.

Expect high ratings on the way for AUS v FRA, given the AFL Saturday Night Football match is a strong ratings guarantee for Seven, and previous results for Matildas matches being very strong.

Probably more so for the Dutch to be fair.
