Deadline reports that management have talked to some Newsnight journalists following their investigation into Huw Edwards before The Sun's story emerged. It is reported that some staff felt uncomfortable at the style, and the timing of the subsequent release of Newsnight's investigation.

Yeah it was a very flimsy piece imho. It reminded me of the McAlpine scandal which was overcompensating for the controversy of them dropping the original Saville investigation.

It's one where they just can't win either way. Reporting it feels insensitive and too close to home. Not reporting it and potentially reprimanding (even if not formally) those who investigated it does not feel right either.

I think the timing of the broadcasting the investigation is potentially problematic.

Primarily, in that the BBC's own investigation into Huw had just resumed. By broadcasting it when they did it could be seen as trying to influence, though they'd argue it was due to it being in the headlines and finally being able to name him.

There's also the secondary issue of broadcasting it after it had been announced that he was in hospital suffering from a mental health episode.

Reading between the lines I'm guessing that some staff may have felt that being asked by Newsnight reporters was a 'muck raking exercise', rather than valid journalism.

There's also a host ''accidentally'' saying Huw's name.  Rolleyes

Newsnight came out looking very bad out of this. The eagerness to pile on your own network and colleague is worse than the stuff they are accusing Edwards of.

Interestingly a tabloid had an article today about Sky as a whole today, I won't link to it, but it does not look good for Sky at least based on this article. According to this article, they (Comcast) wish to offload Sky Germany, have billions in debts with payments due in the next 12 months, and mass job losses are on the way. This is Sky as a whole, how it will impact Sky News remains to be seen, but I suspect there will be an impact of significance. But they promised to keep it funded for 10 years from purchase. Beyond that, I suspect it will be either merged and turned into a secondary channel, or closed with the news operation retained for NBC purposes. As kind of happened with Aljazeera recently, but very different structure and size.

The host who was supposedly leading this investigation.  As someone says in this Deadline interview it feels like something you report to HR, rather than on your programme.

It's another thing though that makes it incredibly difficult to have Huw back.   That'll be even more awkward than the Holly/Ruth handovers.

The Times article has comment outright saying the host is still bitter about the cancellation of her own show: https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/from-hero-to-hr-headache-why-huw-edwards-divided-the-bbc-w2vzqkn9r

I tend to agree - you report to HR and let the investigation happen. It hardly helps the BBC when the headline would've been "A BBC show has investigated claims against a presenter which haven't been investigated by the BBC".

I didn’t know Huw presented Newsnight way back then:

Yes, he and Gavin Esler covered in the summer of 1997 to help gain some presenting experience ahead of the launch of News 24.

Was this Gavin’s first presenting gig? They must have put a lot of trust in him if Newsnight was the first thing he ever presented.
