Might have just been a trial? But they tested it 3 times over network programmes in the evening - each time they did it they'd have a pause symbol top left of the picture then the aston would appear (the standard Midlands Today aston of the time with a yellow band across the top).

For anybody interested, here is an article from the BBC published at the time (May 2007) detailing the alert system, as well as providing an example image (albeit a poor quality one) of how the system looked when utilised in the south east:

Here it is from this lunchtime (grabbed off iPlayer, hence the BBC logo)…

Is this related to these 'Confidence Checks' going back in time?

That really is bizarre, it may not be as obvious but you can see when they're opted because the network picture quality decreases, and nowhere else seems to need these.

I wonder if it's as simple as a legacy thing that has not ever gone away (or kept locally because "that's what we've always done"?). Lots of strange things like this happen just because of corporate habit or local interpretations of things. It may be as you said, the complex nature of their opting arrangements - maybe it's a way of determining where they have opted out? Perhaps on their stack they have 'BBC1 LS OFF AIR' and 'BBC1 HU OFF AIR' to make sure things are working as intended and they aren't just going to hijack Hull's output inadvertently.

Are there any insiders that can explain it?

They do have Net 1 DTT MLM and BMN on the stack I believe - MLM and BMN being Emley and Belmont

It used to be to ensure the correct opt-chain was selected - IIRC it was brought in after a few mishaps after they moved in to the current building at Leeds. May well be that it's still a local SOP that has stuck through the years.

Yes I think that was a similar deal for Oxford Road on analogue only, and well into the overscan area so wouldn't have been seen on domestic sets.

I think there was some speculation (possibly originating with me, I can't remember) that it was a visual equivalent of the VBI ident used to signal that Manchester had opted out, used to switch the IoM transmitters to NW from NE.

Both editions of Calendar are now available to watch at your leisure on ITVX, according to Ian White on X (formerly Twitter).

A Christmas tree appeared in the studio on Look North today, controversially a white tree.

I think they were making a deliberate effort to only get the tree in shot towards the end of the bulletin, it didn’t appear on screen until about 6:50
