GMTV pre-recorded their studio children’s programming and I would think they followed TV-am’s example?
Was Wide Awake Club recorded? it never occurred to me that it wouldn't be live. It's a long time ago I can't remember if they had kids phoning in?

It's one of those odd things where it all went too well for it to be live..... but it's not quite slick enough for it to be recorded - note the pause at 9:25 where Sandi was cued to start dialling (although of course that could have been a mistimed tape playback)

If it was recorded it was directly after the actual show was recorded as the people behind Timmy are the same. Maybe the previous week revealed how it was done
I do not know if it was recorded or not, I can tell you that GMTV recorded their studio based children’s programme during the week. Much more efficient (ie cheaper) to do that as the crew were already there having transmitted the earlier GMB live programme rather than get a crew in at the weekend specifically to do it. I would have thought this practice may have originated at TV-am? But I do not know.

I had my pre job interview at TV-am together with Timmy Mallet who was, I think, applying for a behind the scenes role. Nice enough chap, a lot quieter. Luckily I did not get the job.

Pretty sure Wide Awake Club was live and IIRC it had viewer phone-ins and what not, so it pretty much had to be live.

Wacaday, which was one of the spin-offs of the Wide Awake Club, did get a few repeats in TV-am's final year or so, for reasons that I only presume was due to the "let's not spend a penny more than we absolutely have to" mantra that was in place for the last 14 months of the company's life.

Wacaday IIRC didn't have the viewer interaction that the Wide Awake Club did, being more self contained as it were - it was after all just a bit of padding around a few VTs when it boils down to it, and the whole Mallett's Mallett thing thrown in with some other fodder for good measure.

The post-Wide Awake Club TVam Saturday kids shows were recorded. These were WAC90 which was made at Granada and Top Banana, then TV Mayhem in 1991 until the license loss

The crewing for the original WAC probably wouldn't have been an issue, TVam had other live programmes on Saturday, and of course were always live from the sofa on Sunday for Frost etc. And unlike GMTV they had to have some crew in just to get on air

When it comes to GMTV kids shows, I'm pretty sure Diggit was live, being able to phone and email in (and kids coming into the studio to deal with the calls and emails) was a pretty major part of the show. I think it had gone pre-recorded when it became Diggin' It though. Most of the other GMTV kids stuff I can think of (Saturday Disney, Wake Up In The Wild Room, the Disney Club, Up On The Roof etc.) was quite clearly recorded.

Diggit's quite infamous now though considering what happened to the main presenter...

I had no idea about the presenters recent history, flippin heck 😧

RE: TV Mistakes/Breakdowns - Steve in Pudsey - 16-04-2023

I don't suppose we'll find out what the previous week's "fiasco" was?

Yeah - he was jailed two years ago. Nine years for dangerous driving, and ten more for rape and threatening to kill. Sad

If we're trying to find out what happened the previous week, that led to the telephone call at the start of 73, I'm on a southern and TVS group on Facebook. I'll ask there!

Fearne Cotton must be very unlucky, working with Paul and then dating the lead singer of the Lostprophets.

Though not part of the jail sentence, there's a fraud conviction too. Makes you wonder what happens to make people turn down such a dark path. Used to like him on the Disney Club and Diggit, incredibly sad what he turned into.
