RE: TV Mistakes/Breakdowns - robertclark125 - 05-08-2023

I've mentioned it in the Sports thread, but I'll mention it here. Sky Sports action having serious sound problems, on their coverage of the Argentina v South Africa rugby union match. The sound is very jumpy, and Sky has resorted to putting a banner on the screen, saying "We're sorry about the sound problems", and has almost muted the sound. Incidentally, from the other non sky captions, the host broadcast feed is ESPN, but a screensport caption, detailing commentators, was seen, suggesting they're taking the Screensport feed, but they're using ESPN's scorebar.

Clubland are having quite a big technical issue right now, sound is extremely choppy and there is a small bar of picture at the top left of the screen the rest is black.

The sound issues on the rugby union on Sky Sports action have been sorted (he says) for the second half, but for the first couple of minutes it was the picture quality that was the problem. I'm also wondering, are the Supersport commentators out in Argentina, or in South Africa doing it off tube?

A music channel having sound issues is quite a problem to be fair!

Coming out of the last break of Monday Night RAW, TNT Sports 1 lost sound for about a minute. It then came back, no on screen message or slide was shown.

What would have caused this strange pattern at the beginning of this clip? Also it’s nice to see a bit of the old Virgin EPG.

Wasn’t this a result of a power cut affecting the studios?

Yeah that was a power cut usually knocking something else out in the chain. The sit-up channels always went a bit crazy every time those studios had a power cut, it was sort of like being on air but seemingly unaware that those patterns were going out so you had all kinds of things.

The sit-up channels often had regular power failures, problems with the phone lines or daylight saving time causing the system to go buggy.

Here’s another one I saw on YouTube recently as well, was this really caused by a clock change? Seems the announcer was a bit confused on this one…

RE: TV Mistakes/Breakdowns - agemame - 17-08-2023

The 'announcer' here is a prerecorded sample bank, the on duty channel director was clearly hunting for the right one to play.

The clock change seems to have affected the relay in studio, as the game in question was completed elsewhere. I believe Bingo Night Live was more like a newspaper bingo contest than a truly random number draw, they knew precisely which cards had what on them, so the game was effectively a play out to identify a given card or cards as randomly selected from the registered games. A clock drift there could lead to the wrong game being played out with the wrong cards, and in that case it would be a bit of a catastrophe when sorting out the prizes. Probably best to stop, let the game time out, and sync everything back up to start again.
