Some more classic CITV technical faults, this time a technical problem going into Sooty and Co, where Steve Ryde fills in for a bit whilst most likely some angry men are frantically pressing buttons to try and start the programme!

Another one here where an episode of Tots TV falls off air for a short bit, which similarly leaves this announcer to fill in

And a CITV breakdown filler with repair robots, which was shown during many breakdowns (this here was during an episode of Rupert)

The reason I also mention this clip was because of an old comment from many years ago which was posted as a reply to another (since then another user reposted this from memory) of Gladiators: Train 2 Win constantly going off the air due to technical difficulties on a Friday afternoon, where the problems got so bad that they decided to end CITV early (since Gladiators was the final programme on the schedule that day) where Steve Ryde (I could imagine) in a slightly peeved off tone eventually said "CITV will be back, Monday." before hearing him throw down some papers.

Would love to see this breakdown surface once day, it would (at least for me anyways) be the holy grail of TV breakdown footage because it definitely sounded like Steve had enough at that point.

The Tots TV breakdown I feel is a local opt out/cover rather than one done by Central (IIRC Tots TV came from Central so they'd have a better idea of what's gone wrong and how to get it back which is probably why they didn't chuck their own up) and the Sooty one, almost certainly either a playout issue from Granada or a timing issue. Sooty lived at Thames the previous year (and had done since the 1960s) and because they lost their license Sooty went north with the new Sooty & Co.

With regards to Rupert, well not sure who was feeding that but the comments suggest its from 1993 and that's not the regular CITV announcer so I suspect that's a local cover as well.

The Tots TV breakdown is an HTV breakdown slide so could well have just affected them (and maybe Westcountry too if that's HTV Wales) hence why CITV themselves didn't react

And indeed, HTV West (that's Peter Crawford announcing from Bristol, though AFAIK, playout for both Wales and the West came from Cardiff, as per Westcountry)

As for Sooty, quite telling that Granada Pres faded up their prod cap early after the delayed start.

Can just about remember at least one occasion where they did have a lot of playout issues with the last show of the day but can't recall whether they went so far as to abandon it.

Well that episode in full with the credits is here:

And at the point Granada or whoever cut it off to the end-cap the unaired sequence was 20 seconds to the Sooty Endcap (not the Granada one, the one with Sooty) - and the delay in getting going was about 22 seconds, so they could have just left it and it would have finished on the Sooty endcap, but of course had to hem their own in!

As for playout issues with the last show of the day, not that I remember, though I do know Thames and Carlton did their own thing at the end of the day Friday because of the 5:15pm handover to LWT, and CITV would have been finishing close to 5:10pm in this era.

For a short while Thames did an extra 5 mins of CITV - one short cartoon - on Friday evenings to take it up to the handover to LWT at 5:15. This was only for their last few months though and was because LWT moved their local news to 5:15 and so there was time to fill.

Before that, and after Carlton started, Home and Away started at 5:10 and straddled the two stations airtime.

For many years H&A was on at 5:10 on Fridays and 6:00 Monday-Thursday in London. That was because LWT always had an hour long magazine show at 6. That ended in the spring of 1992 ready for LNN starting in the new year so they could move H&A to be at 6 all week

The end of 'A Midsummer Night's Tube' on Channel 4 in June 1983 - and Keith Harrison's in-vision closedown is accompanied, at first, by some panicky talkback from the Pres control room.

One thing I notice from a few of these early-era clips is the number of times said talkback managed to make it on air.

Looks like a telecine fault, I think they were still playing directly from film at that point in time.

RE: TV Mistakes/Breakdowns - Stooky Bill - 06-09-2023

They had stopped TXing from telecine by August 1987
