RE: TV Mistakes/Breakdowns - Steve in Pudsey - 30-11-2023

The idea of 80s era BBC1 pres managing to play out programmes in the wrong order is pretty remarkable. That they would notice immediately and still go with the wrong programme rather than pull it and get the right programme is unthinkable.

Yet, that's what happens here

Here's the day's schedule confirming that PC Pinkerton should have been on before Fireman Sam https://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/service_bbc_one_london/1988-11-29

There's no point doing a potentially sub standard bulletin if you don't have to, so why not stop and do it properly.

Mentioning it is useful for the gallery or other colleagues involved in its production or recording of it, so they know what's going on behind the camera.

It should also be a good indicator that it's the wrong take, but...

Presumably it wasn't them getting the programmes in the wrong order because of a mix up, but because there was an issue with PC Pinkerton? Makes sense that instead of getting  Andy to fill and cause timing issues later on, they just played Fireman Sam first while they sorted PC Pinkerton. Maybe

Hmm. He has talkback, so if it was an intentional thing it probably shouldn't have taken Andy by surprise in the way it did?

He seems to yeah, but possibly he or his colleagues through the glass wouldn't have wanted to have the entire conversation about the problem going on in his ear.

I imagine either the potential problem with the programme was known about for the whole junction and the decision to play it was last minute once it was obvious it wouldn't be sorted... or it all went wrong very close to TX time and it was a impulse decision to go to the second programme.

There is the chance that it was just the wrong programme that was played. I don't know what VT workflow was then but they were played from the basement VT area. Go forward 20 years when I was involved in such things and each programme and clock was checked and double checked. There was no chance of accidently playing the wrong one, I can't imagine it being more lax back in those days

I’ve noticed that this episode is on ITVX Premium and this scene starts at 28:36 just in case anyone would like to see what was supposed to happen next

When Andy is running through the programmes does he say something like “Fireman Sam is on the VT clock in Wales”?!

RE: TV Mistakes/Breakdowns - Steve in Pudsey - 02-12-2023

In Welsh. Wasn't it an S4C co-commission with Welsh versions made?

Indeed he does, he seemingly figures it was just being lined up only for it to be going to air right now, probably a mistiming in Wales but we may never know why it was running early.

It wouldn't be played in from Wales, I think he meant that it said the name in Welsh on the clock, which is understandable as its a Welsh programme

Andy did like to ham it up in these kind of situations (shouting through to next door "Are we going to Neighbours early?" on one occasion when a trail fell off air), so possibly that's in the mix here.
