RE: Mistakes/Breakdowns - Steve in Pudsey - 05-09-2022

Looks like finger trouble in NC2 following News Night, taking the weather and immediately fading to black then into a Newscast slide (silent) and a trail.

But it was well handled going back to the weather after the trail.

Yes, nicely back to the weather...

BBC Two Wales was on the clean feed when the weather was broadcast.

Consequently, the BBC Two filler animation appeared, instead of the network trails.

A mishap on BBC Two Wales this afternoon, as a result of the schedule changes:

UKI 1961 is their new production truck with KU uplink, but they don't usually need to uplink from Downing street. Maybe just mixing in the truck with the output being patched into the fibre box at Downing Street.

What does KU uplink mean?

Uploading an uplink to a comms satellite using the KU satellite spectrum. I think only used as backup these days however.

A little bit poor for Wales to leave the filler graphic up during the post-Newsnight weather cockup with no announcement - and a shame that in styling it out on network they compounded the problem for the Nations.

Does anyone have an 'idiot's guide' to why the problem on Network caused another, different problem in Wales? I've been trying to understand how it all fits together but I don't quite follow.

There's an explanation in this article:

Uploading an uplink to a comms satellite using the KU satellite spectrum. I think only used as backup these days however.

Satellite is still used for main feeds, it depends on whether there's any other connectivity such as a fibre. Bonded cellular is used quite a lot nowadays but it doesn't give the sort of bandwidth you can get on satellites and it's no good at big events where there's hundreds of mobile phones.

In this case it will be a sat truck being used as a production vehicle plugged into a wallbox. No point using satellite and they probably couldn't even see one from there with all the buildings
