Unused Idents and Presentation -
Blubatt - 29-09-2022
I've done this before back on the Purple Place, and it was an interesting thread there. This thread celebrates idents that were never used on screen. They were made, either as finished products or in rough form, shown to executives or focus groups, and they were scrapped for multiple reasons. Think mocks, but for people who had the power to make those changes.
Some of the more notable ones:
BBC One/BBC Two Test idents from 1989/1990

Original versions of the ITV Heart Idents (A very well covered story from the world of pres, though the last one is just an unused endboard)

Channel 4's (thankfully) unused redesign of the 4 Blocks

Are there any more that you are aware of? Let us know!
Another one, originally found by another Purple user, who said that this was a design by the same people who made the Yorkshire and Tyne Tees regional idents for 1999. While this is not an ident, and more a draft for what would have been an ident, it shows us what a potential new look for Granada would look like, without the arrowed 'G'

Ahh the curse of tv - repeats.
As you say, this has been previously covered in TVLF and so can I suggest people read the thread there first.

IIRC that infamous Oneness had an unused figure sketching ident…

This Channel 4 Ident from their excellent optical illusion era was never used on-screen. A shame as it's a good one. I think it's called Drunk Man.

From the Blue Place: And earlier prototype on BBC One, and perhaps the earliest adaptation of the exact term:
I see why they ditched the idea soon afterwards - the globe in the O makes the wordmark looks unbalanced.

Maybe they could've switched it around so the BBC logo was on top?

Didn't RTE in Ireland use the same layout? A One in the middle of the screen and a small RTE logo at the bottom?

This seems very long to be an ident - the “4” doesn’t appear until about 40 seconds in - perhaps that’s the reason it wasn’t used? Or it was an early “cut” and would have been re-edited or remade if it was used.

Yes, I'm not a huge fan of it either. It also doesn't quite fit the structure of the rest of the set, in that the blocks have to deliberately move to make the '4' form-up and then move away to break it up, rather than it being a camera angle thing that means that the '4' is briefly formed.

Yes they did, from 1995-2003.
