RE: Doctor Who - JMT1985 - 26-12-2023

It was a rather nice, fun fantasy episode with some goblins, a link to Christmas, even a bit of singing and dancing thrown in for a laugh, and some amazing SFX.

RTD is certainly making No.15 different to previous incarnations, which is really making the most of a central character that can change.

Of course, this morning the anti-BBC commentators on the DM's forum have launched into a tirade about 'wokery'. I don't know what's 'woke' about goblins.

I really enjoyed 15th's first outing too - I really like his personality and energy, feels so right for 2024 onward.

Overnight figures shouldn't be even considered, as overnight figures mean nothing now - it is the 7 day consolidated and later the 28 day final total which mean anything.

The overnight figures are in, and just as I expected, Doctor Who pulled in a respectable 4.7 million overnight. Perfect figure for Christmas Night.

Quick search for 'Doctor Who' and you'll only reach the 2005 - 2022 episodes

You have to do a full search to find 'Doctor Who (2023-)' and also 'Doctor Who (1963-1996)'

O2/T but find that an issue generally with iPlayer and others too. You search for a popular programme and the first result is an ancient show that had it as an episode title years earlier.

Very sad news indeed. Richard as Mike was part of what I consider the golden age (no pun intended) of Dr Who in the 70s'. RIP

Lizo Mzimba has said that the star beast's +28 figure is around 9.5 million.

Some ratings data from the US of the anniversary specials. In the top 10 programmes on Disney+ by minutes viewed. I've seen some extrapolate those numbers to get ball park figures of 1-2 million (if each person whatched each episode in full once) (context: series 11 averaged 1.6 million viewers on BBC America and 3.6 million for the 50th).

BBC America figures references. I've seen series 13 quoted at 300 000, but it sounds suspicious to me that have much of a drop off.

The latest Collection DVD set is announced today as featuring Season 15. And to announce that, another returning face in a specially made clip, with Louise Jameson returning as Leela.

The Mirror reports that Mille Gibson's role is reduced for season 2/series 15 and she will not appear in this year's Christmas special. It also reports Varada Seethu will ber replacement as companion.

A real shame if Millie will be only around for such a short period, she was great in the episode we've seen and her character ans surrounding were great as well. And a bit surreal for a main character to be set to leave before the audience have really seen her much.

Series 15 rumour:

Millie's series 15 filming apparently involved he character's boyfriend

RE: Doctor Who - UTVLifer - 20-01-2024

Crikey. It'll be a shame to lose Millie after only one series, but we've had one series companions before and hopefully Ruby will might be able to return one day depending on her exit.

I'd assume the 2024 Christmas special with Nicola Coughlan will act as a bridge between Ruby and the new companion a la The Runaway Bride back in the day

Assuming it's true, I wonder how the production team will handle this news now it's out there.

It'd be weird to announce the companion for S15 before we've even seen S14, so I imagine they'll just not confirm it officially for ages - like they did with NPH playing the Toymaker or Bonnie Langford's return during the 60th.

RE: Doctor Who - IanJRedman - 20-01-2024

I feel a bit sorry for the production team. What a lacklustre way for, potentially, the name of a new lead actor to get out. Come to that, the paper's treatment of Millie isn't great here, either - putting her on the front page with claims she was "dropped", when we know nothing of the sort.

Definitely a pitfall of filming so far in advance, though. Ruby has appeared in just one episode, and here we're getting information about 2025 and beyond.

That's assuming it's actually true, but to be honest, I suspect so. The author of the Mirror piece has at least a 90% hit rate.

RE: Doctor Who - AaronTV - 20-01-2024

I do think the Mirror have been quite unfair here - it was probably always Russell’s plan to have a new companion for season two, with Millie doing a handful of episodes. I also personally think it’s looking quite likely Ncuti will only do two full seasons, so I’m guessing Russell wanted a different dynamic before Ncuti potentially leaves.

Companions staying for long stretches has become much more common in recent years, but going back to 2005 they tended to be much shorter stints.

Freema Agyeman, for example, only did a single series as Martha and from what I can remember Russell had always planned another companion for the fourth series, which eventually became Donna’s return. Martha was always intended as a returning character, however, including in the show’s spin offs, so I wouldn’t be surprised if Millie turned up in the future too.

IIRC the tabloids also spoiled Catherine Tate returning for Series 4 before Freema’s episodes had even aired, which in turn confirmed Freema was leaving.
