Can you explain how exactly that would work?

I mean as soon as the picks are announced people will be commenting on who has first picks for each round.

And?

It won’t make one jot of difference the picks. Besides no one has actually qualified yet.

RE: 2022 FIFA World Cup - Andrew - 10-12-2022

99% of football fans pay no attention to a press release the BBC and ITV release six months before the tournament starts!

The majority had no idea who had first pick a week ago

And that qualification campaign will actually be a challenge for England with four teams who were at Euro 2020(21) competing for two automatic places. Channel Four could get some good ratings out of it. Possibly (If reports this week are to be believed) be the first match of a new manager,

Apparently the BBC are showing France v Morocco but I can’t find confirmation.

ITV announced Argentina vs Croatia in their coverage, so the BBC must be showing the other game

I wonder when the rights for 2026 will actually be decided. Is something shown in a streaming service only a breach of the protected list? Or could we see FIFA sell some of the rights to Netflix or Amazon?

Suprised the BBC haven’t sent a push notification to announce that. Being it’s them who have first pick they have to have known before ITV announced it.

The FIFA Men’s World Cup Finals Tournament is designated as a listed event for the purposes of the Broadcasting Act 1996, Ofcom’s consent is needed to broadcast exclusive live television coverage of it.

The criteria for a channel for an event like this is "free-to-view and receivable by 95% of the UK population."

So in other words Prime is not a qualifying service.

It would be interesting to see what happens if FIFA simply refuse to sell to a broadcaster. Ofcom don’t have full power over streaming services so could they actually block them?

Have you not read a word I wrote?

If FIFA don't sell to the BBC or ITV, the legislation means the event is protected and has to go on a channel/outlet that can be seen subject to the criteria. Probably nothing to stop them selling it to Prime, though how is that going to meet the "free to air" criteria and "receivable by 95% of the population" criteria? The latter falls down straight away and the former, well streaming isn't Free to air, because you have to pay for the broadband and the phone line if nothing else.
