I do believe that if the Dutch team do well, people will watch.
Yes, these polls are pointless because I don’t think have really been thinking about this World Cup until the last week or so. And it’s a totally different kettle of fish if your nation starts to do well and momentum builds.

that's as I understand it - they're sharing studios at the venues, but will be dressing them with their own sets (and a few other variations, like in numbers of cameras, etc). One assumes they've got separate studio spaces for the final!

The main take out is that they are doing stadium based presentation, whereas for summer tournaments we have got used to having a single studio except for the biggest games

This will presumably mean it’ll be more basic, as one of the benefits of a single studio in recent years is all the fancy virtual stuff they do, both as part of the set, and also virtual graphics, tables, player line ups etc

Well that’s what would normally happen but who knows. The opening couple of days are not that well scheduled in terms of grabbing European audiences with the not very exciting opening match and the main evening match of Wales v USA not having that much European appeal outside of the UK. Europe seems to be the main continent where ratings will be lower - the hype seems more normal in South America for example.  But in places like Germany it seems like the majority of core football fans are claiming they will boycott watching.

Well it’s only possible because it’s being held in a tiny country where all stadiums are within 120 minutes of each other.

Fox Sports' on-location set is oddly a mix between the US Military base and the main studio in Doha:

TSN in Canada also has a studio in Qatar, following the team's first debut since 1986:

Much more negative reponses to the US broadcaster (possibly due to Qatar's controversies and the inclusion of US Military bases?), compared to that to Canada.

Also Fox Sports is sticking with strictly matches (Awful Announcing):
Quote:“Our approach is clear, and it’s identical to what it was four years ago in Russia,” executive producer David Neal told The Inquirer. “We believe that viewers come to Fox Sports during the World Cup to see the greatest sports event in the world. They don’t come to us expecting us to be [HBO’s] Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, or [ESPN’s] E: 60. That’s not who we pretend to be, and I don’t think that’s what the viewer expectation is.”

    […]

“If a story affects the field of play, if it affects the competition in the tournament, we will cover it fully,” Neal said. “If it doesn’t, if it’s ancillary to the tournament, if it has to do with the construction of the venues or what have you, we’re going to leave that to other entities to cover. Our focus is entirely on the 64-game tournament.”

The military base was used for a special edition of Fox NFL Sunday on Veterans Day weekend, I don't think it'll be used during the World Cup.

I'm always impressed by the money being spent by US broadcasters like Fox or ESPN on purpose-built sets for football events like the World Cup and the Euro when it doesn't seem like these events are that important for the average american sports fan.

That was certainly the case before America hosted the World Cup for the first time in 1994.  Since then, they've taken to the World Cup and Soccer in general a lot more than they had before it.  It's now the 5th most popular sport ahead of Tennis, Golf and Motorsport, but still behind the big 4 of American Football, Baseball, Basketball & Ice Hockey.  Although, I would say that Soccer is competing with Ice Hockey for that 4th place spot, it hasn't quite overtaken it yet.  However, the NHL don't seem to be helping themselves in terms of keeping interest in the game, and MLS certainly seem to putting in more effort generally to increase their fanbase, so who knows how long it will be before Soccer is officially number 4 on the list.

Feels like the whole thing's becoming a dumpster fire at this point, and it's not even started yet!
