Annie Nightingale, Radio 1's longest serving presenter, has died at the age of 83.

Having a listen now - they're sticking with normal output, most unlike how they went into Obit mode straightaway when John Peel died.

EDIT: Matt and Mollie paid tribute when the news was announced - asides that, they’re getting on with their normal show.

I heard some of Radio 2 just after the news was announced and Scott Mills did a little tribute to her with some archive clips including a bit from her recent Desert Island Discs.

I think it's a harder thing for Radio 1 to do, their audience has less of an appreciation of the history of the station, they did a good job. For Radio 2 though, especially as they had a former long serving Radio 1 DJ on air at the time they could do it a bit more in depth

I guess the difference between John Peel's death and how it was covered is that he was more well known to the (daytime) Radio 1 audience, was still turning up on the TV coverage of Glastonbury etc, whereas Annie has been tucked away in the schedule with a very niche show - which is incredible at her age to still be there and still be relevant to that section of the audience.

In 2004 you had the likes of Moyles, Whiley, Murray, Bowman, and Mills on daytime Radio 1 and a quite a chunk of their audience, who grew up listening to Peel in his prime and could share anecdotes, whereas the likes of Matt and Mollie - and I take nothing away from their tribute or the sincerity of it - and crucially their listeners weren't writing in to Annie's request show on a Sunday night.

I think they got the tone right, and I'm confident (but haven't checked) that Scott Mills will have cleared his running order on Radio 2 to share tributes from listeners etc.
