RE: French TV - News Discussion - London Lite - 10-10-2023

On Monday, Franceinfo was 100% Israel to the point that the morning show had no sport or culture segments. They kept to the brand names for the programmes to the point they still used the Planéte info branding which was fully about the terrorist attacks.

Today on the other hand, they reverted to a near-normal format which was still dominated by Israel, but also had French domestic news and regular features on La Matinale and Planéte info.

With the incidents in Brussels, news channels had to alter some of its scheduling to cover the ongoing developments:

BFMTV broke the news during Le 20h de Ruquier, with both Julie Hammett and Laurent Ruquier staying on air together until Maxime Switek took over for his late evening slot, which was extended until around 1h.

LCI extended its coverage until 0h30, sticking with its "Édition Spéciale" mode with studio commentators.

No word about CNEWS.

Franceinfo simulcast France 24 during most of the night.
Here's the news breaking on BFMTV.

And for some reason Brunet, being Brunet, decided to end the show with a handshake with co-anchor Emilie Broussouloux.

L'Edition de la Nuit didn't seem to have been aired at all on BFMTV with Maxime Switek being looped from 1am, same as usual on LCI with a loop of Brunet & Co. On a normal day there's usually no issue with that, but I do wonder on the risk of information being outdated on the overnight loop (without much mention that it is a recorded loop apart from an Edition Speciale or Direct being scrubbed from the graphics) in such circumstances.

RE: French TV - News Discussion - Medianext.MX - 24-10-2023

Franceinfo's new "extended" holiday mode has been put on place with the start of the Toussaint holiday. Its normal programming has been on air (at least for today), but with deputy presenters (jokers) in most slots. For example, Matthieu Belliard has filled in for Jean-Baptiste Marteau on La Matinale, Guillaume Daret for Axel de Tarlé on L'info s'éclaire, Patrice Romedenne for Marianne Théoleyre on L'info chez vous, Christophe Gascard for Émilie Tran Nguyen on Le 12/13 info, and Laurène Barrière for Flore Maréchal on Au cœur de l'info (14h/17h, Martin Baumer was however presenting as normal).

On Patricia Loison's slot, there is an unusual double presentation by Jeanne Baron and Jordan Klein, with Marion Vigreux standing in for Sonia Chironi on Le 19h info, and Jean-Christophe Galeazzi replacing Alexandra Uzan on Le 23h info. In contrast, Lucie Chaumette anchored her 21h/23h slot as normal, and the radio simulcasts had its normal presenting teams (although Bérengère Bonte anchored the evening Les Informés solo).

RE: French TV - News Discussion - London Lite - 24-10-2023

I'd debate that Martin has moved into the lead presenter role replacing Flore, with Laurène in Martin's role as the co-presenter.

Bar Lucie Chaumette staying on her evening show, they've seemed to have tried to keep it as normal as possible on La Matinale with David Delos, Alix Bouilhaguet and Alix Dauge in their usual roles.

At the start of Planéte Info, there was no steady cam intro from Lucie which is a subtle way of showing they don't have full steady cam cover during this holiday period, although it's a vast improvment on the previous holiday format of sticking a presenter behind the desk for the top of the hour, then looping the bulletin with the usual padding from INA, TV5MONDE etc.

In a sense it's a return to mornings (albeit temporarily) for him! He used to present the matinale en Europe 1 until Bollore cleaned house and before that he was on RMC's pre-matinale and at times co-hosted Bourdin Direct.

CNEWS is still far ahead though

And time has told: BFM TV's share for that hour is getting nearly close to the average it had last season (when Aurélie Casse presented at that hour). Worse not only for Hammett, given she lacks any kind of chemistry with Ruquier, but also for losing to a major competitor like CNEWS, given Pascal Praud's second daily shout fest had nearly four times more viewers than Ruquier, boosted thanks to an interview with Home Minister Gérald Darmanin on the ongoing crisis in the Middle East and the terrorism alert related to it, allowing it to break the million viewer mark. Additionally, BFM TV was really close to LCI and Franceinfo in the share.

Honestly, to BFM TV's detriment, and not withstanding they have continuously run into hot water with all that right-leaning punditry and clash, CNEWS has found quite a niche at that hour, and positioned them as the alternative to the 20h newscasts on the main channels and the more laidback infotainment talkers, thanks to Pascal Praud's explosive style and also due to its consistency, having stood three consecutive seasons on air at that time (the decision to drop Éric Zemmour from Face à l'info did not have an effect on ratings too). In contrast, BFM TV has had a tug in the time slot since Fogiel took over: they dropped the politics-focused 20h newscast in favour of trying opinion-led formats with Alain Marschall and Natacha Polony to no success; extending Yves Calvi and Aurélie Casse last season did not help matters either, also worsened by the multiple controversies Fogiel has had during his stewardship of the network.

On Monday, the 20/22 overall was behind LCI. They didn't communicate for the 21/22 over on BFMTV so I assume that's where they were 3rd and Ruquier was still 2nd by a few thousand viewers.

Ruquier was in essence supposed to be a left-wing 'Heure des Pros' but anyone watching recently could tell you the coverage would not be liked by anyone in that target audience. Who are they trying to please? Perhaps the right like most of BFMTV nowadays? Perhaps just Ruquier fans for the sake of it being Ruquier presenting?

RE: French TV - News Discussion - London Lite - 25-10-2023

Finally a jockey on Planéte info, Pauline Forgue in for Lucie Chaumette on Franceinfo.

Tuesday and Wednesday, LCI beat BFMTV overall on the 20/22 slot and seems likely even in the 20/21 more specifically. Of note, Rochebin (with his show's branding) replaced Un Oeil sur le Monde starting Wednesday as usual hosts Julien Arnaud and Amelie Carrouer are off, Guillaume Cerin subbed in on Tuesday with Carrouer presenting alone on Monday.
