Big shock on Brazilian TV news yesterday. Glória Maria, the first Black TV journalist in Brazil, has died aged 73 due to lung cancer. She was on leave since last September to resume treatment.

Glória worked for its entire career at TV Globo, where she made history in a number of additional firsts: first live TV cross in colour, first Black anchor of RJTV, first Black anchor of Jornal Hoje, first Black anchor of Sunday newsmagazine Fantástico and first Black presenter of Globo Repórter. She also became known for interviewing the likes of Michael Jackson, Freddie Mercury, Madonna and many other celebrities.

Her importance to Globo's and Brazilian TV history led to Globo cancelling last night's telenovela schedule in favour of tribute specials:

As the news went on air during the morning lineup, most of Globo's live shows were dedicated to Glória Maria's career, concluding in a very emotional send-off by William Bonner and Renata Vasconcellos during last night's Jornal Nacional, including many current and past Globo news personalities joining in:

I guess finance programming counts as news programmes?

After updating their news studio last year, i-Cable group updated the sets used by financial programmes on HKIBC (FTA Ch.76) and their Finance & Information Channel, opting for a more cornered look than their news counterparts.

Finance HKEX: As its Chinese title suggests, the show was originally shot live from their newsroom in HKEX (and another studio after the market has closed?). Now, the latter has been renovated into a wooden studio.

Money Buzz/Market Express: Sharing the same set, the two shows had been in a temp studio similar to that of Cable News last year. With their new studio came a new triangular desk, and the same grey/blue colour hues.

Yesterday, as Portugal's TVI celebrated its 30th anniversary, the broadcaster relaunched its newscasts, bringing back the names Jornal Nacional (formerly Jornal das 8) for its 8pm bulletin, and, the next day, TVI Jornal (formerly Jornal da Uma) for the 1pm bulletin, and the TVI sound logo to their opening sequences, which received a new VTM-inspired set, and new graphics (now CNN Sans-free):

And here is how today's TVI Jornal looked like:

Diário da Manhã (their 6:30am bulletin) was also affected by the changes, albeit without a name change:

Esta Manhã (their US-inspired breakfast show, which replaced most of Diário da Manhã two years ago), received a new set and the new lower-thirds:

Couple of thoughts on Global News new VR sets. Firstly, why didnt they just wait and launch EVERYTHING at the same time. The graphics appeared months ago. They should have just waited so that revealed an entire fresh new look. Its not like they had to build any, because the desks appear to be exactly the same. So stupid. The "set" itself is OK. But goodness did the designer go overboard on the texture lighting scheme. It makes an already complex set feel even more cluttered to me for some reason. Waay to many materials used and then layer that with the texture lighting it feels even more cluttered somehow. Its not horrible. But in general I dont like VR sets. (Germany Im looking at you)
