I wonder how that will go over with the Canadian public. Having said that the situation the situation is dire. I think more shocking cutbacks will be coming it the advertising market doesnt pickup. BUt in the age of streaming.........its unlikely to change. I think these smaller countries are seeing what the future of commercial telly looks like, but with no idea what can be done. I dont know that anyone knows. People are abandoning traditional tv in droves. In North America for years people have been ripped off for the cost of paytv and internet. Now they are just dumping paying and strictly going with streaming. Killing the bottom line of some paytv providers.

It won’t happen. The conservatives in in Canada have promised this before and pretty much every Tory party in every country with a public state broadcaster promise this in manifestos. They never do it. There are only three examples I can think of;

Luxembourg - the government maintained a stake in RTL and it was pretty unique given RTL’s commercial interests. The government also enforces very strict PSB rules on RTL as part of this agreement so viewers aren’t poorly served.

France - Only one of the channels was spun off to reduce the dominance of France TV.

NZ (effectively breaking up RNZ and semi privatising TVNZ)- Let’s not even go there. It has always been a mess as we can see in this thread.

My guess is the Tories will win and will then start a major consultation which will be very divisive. We’re likely to see more of a Swiss campaign with chat about funding rather than full privatisation. Quebec will also kick off a lot about it and likely push for SRC to be taken over by the government in Montreal. In short, it isn’t going to an easy win for the new administration. Get your popcorn ready!

The Newshub closure would be devastating for NZ media, but feels like it's a bit of a threat from WBD to try and get the government to pay to keep it.

The AM crew reacting to the news that their show will be canned and the emotions that came with that news.

Didn't that only start about a year ago?

Definitely, but they’ve gone about it terribly. The NZ Government has been very clear that WBD explicitly told them it didn’t require any financial support. The fact it caught the government by surprise will not land well with those in power. I wouldn’t be surprised if the pressure is put firmly on WBD to put up or sell up.

Yes, and it's unfortunate it has to end a year later...
Kiwis need an alternative to TVNZ

These are the risks about having one of the main commercial operation being owned by a multinational corporation, especially a giant one such as WBD

They might get rid of "less fruitful" assets but culturally important assets such as this one, especially with no regulation (which surprises me from New Zealand! Even if it's a commercial operation), such as having a news quota, by the national regulators

Or they'll "save" Newshub but axe everything and just have one 30 minute bulletin each night.

It's been going for a number of years now - for a while, it was a TV-radio simulcast until WBD and Mediaworks cut ties in 2021.

RE: International News Presentation: Past and Present - lookoutwales - 01-03-2024

Now it's emerged WBD held talks about pooling its resources with that of TVNZ into a joint news organisation - only for them to be swiftly dismissed by the state broadcaster (which today reported a sharp drop in profits in its interim results).
