I didn't realise that Stuart Flinders of the BBC North West Parish popped up nationally.

Yes I think he was on a secondment for either 6 or 12 months circa 2008-09. From what I remember he was quite good.

Here he is presenting a shift with the late, great Al Yates:

Talk about an unusual pairing! Looks like Al was drafted in a couple of hours early to help with the breaking news.

How many different sets of opening titles have there been? (Excluding minor changes) Is this right? Extraordinary we’ve had the same for FIFTEEN years.

1997-1999 https://youtu.be/5oH_bfNe4Js
1999-2003 https://youtu.be/BJ-isQgxYIk
2003-2004 https://youtu.be/wqFtS91NwHo
2004-2007 https://youtu.be/tyYlTm7qxQY
2007-2008 https://youtu.be/3zl8W5D3O7s
2008-2023 https://youtu.be/y9YYKE-ByY0

Loved that 2007-2008 look and that headline bed: https://youtu.be/3I3LabgghMc

I'd personally count the changes to the titles after the move to NBH as pretty significant. They replaced a significant portion of the traditional globe graphics with gorgeous shots of the newsroom and studio.

My favourite would have to be the 07-08 look. Some of the best music David Lowe has done in my opinion.

Overall, my favourite package would have to be 2007-8 - the titles and graphics were gorgeous, and could have run for years. And that countdown! Heart That being said, the 2003 music was probably the best News 24 ever sounded. What a headline bed. Nothing has ever topped that, IMO.

Looking at these screenshots, in particular of the Barco era, I do miss the different daytime & nighttime backgrounds that are possible with a virtual background. There was a slight difference after 10pm in E with darker blue shades in the newsroom, but we've lost that now the 6 & 10 are in B.

Of course World had a stunning daytime and nighttime backdrop in C, but that's gone now with the 24/7 bland fake newsroom backdrop.

Some very unusual pairings there. Emma Crosby wasn't with the Beeb for very long, was she? I definitely do remember her there - she did the One on a strike day in November 2010 - but judging from those caps she seems to have been on quite a bit more than I thought. And Geoff Clark! Never knew he did a stint on the NC. (Is that TC7 he and Anita McVeigh were sat in?)

Quite poignant to see Rachael Bland (or Hodges, as she was back then) next to Anita in that last picture.

Prior to Philip Hayton, Joanna worked with Ben Geoghegan on News 24 weekday mornings.
Was Philip on six days a week, then? You're lucky if you see a newscaster do a five-day week these days, never mind six!

It's funny the things you remember. Despite only doing possibly a weekend or two at the most 14 years ago, I seem to distinctly remember both Geoff Clark and Sabet Choudhury doing those NC stints! Also Roger Johnson was a frequent relief presenter at the turn of the last decade, before he made a permanent move to the North.

Emma Crosby was there for about 2 months I think after she was made redundant from ITV Breakfast and went freelance. I remember being very but pleasantly surprised when I first saw her pop up in the NC on a Saturday night. She was used quite frequently too during her brief time there. She replaced Natasha Kaplinsky on 5 News after that.

As for Philip Hayton, I can imagine he was given Fridays off to compensate. I think Adrian Finighan possibly did Fridays as well as being the main ‘shift filler’ on News 24 and World at the time?

There seems to be a lot of love for the short 15-month 2007 era. For me, it's always been one of those things that is not a winner in any individual category, but pretty solid across the board - so I can see why it comes top for a lot of people. I think it's parts of the graphics that put me off a bit, if they'd just pared back the bevels and flashes, I'd give them a much higher mark. Nonetheless, should definitely have lasted far longer - though I don't think they could have last as long as the white and red titles, the 2007 titles do still look quite good and it always bears repeating what a massive technical improvement they were over the earlier versions of the clamshell (as well as how quickly this graphic revolution happened).

I'd certainly agree that it was one of Lowe's better packages - given that the 2008 theme is pretty much just a modified version of the 2007 theme, it's a shame that the energy of the package was lost in the 2008 rebrand - which could sometimes feel a bit hollow. Though I don't think he'll ever beat the 1999 nationals bed, the 2007 bed was also a good example of one that was more musically deep/interesting (if you get what I'm saying), but didn't step into OTT territory (in the way that I feel the 2002 World beds did).
