Maitlis then took maternity leave later that year, which is when Joanna joined Ben in the evenings. Then when Maitlis returned about a year later, she started doing Monday afternoons with Jon Sopel, and focused on that along with her roles on Newsnight and BBC One bulletins.
That sounds about right. In the end, Maitlis on Mondays ended up being pretty much the only reliable presence in the afternoon shift - around mid-2010 it became a bit of a free-for-all - even when Sopel or Minchin did appear, it was rarely together.

He had a nice friendly informality. Here was his final evening in 2009 with Annita McVeigh: https://youtu.be/wsLhqXvYscU

And here with Joanna Gosling in 2003 (I loved this countdown with scenes from around the UK): https://youtu.be/czZ_sQCdt4o

He presented with Anna Jones before that, too:

I think she and Joanna Gosling must have swapped shifts at some point in 2003, as before that Joanna did the morning shift with Philip Hayton.

I think that's correct. Joanna did weekend evenings with Chris Lowe until 2006 when she moved up to doing weekday evenings with Ben Brown. Annita McVeigh then joined Chris in which is what I think was her first regular gig on the channel.

Joanna also did indeed do mornings with Philip Hayton until she swapped with Anna Jones. When Anna Jones left in 2005 Kate Silverton got mornings which led to the infamous Silverton/Hayton feud leading to Hayton's sudden departure. I only wish I started watching the channel a year or so earlier as I bet they were an interesting watch (!).

It's a very small thing, I know, but that clip has reminded me of how much better (relatively speaking) N6 looked when they lit the top lightbox in red rather than white - just looked a bit cold, bright and sterile in all white. Always amazing what a little bit of colour can do for a set.

Mornings: Simon McCoy & Kate Silverton (then Carrie Gracie)
Lunchtime: Jane Hill & Matthew Amroliwala
Afternoons: Jon Sopel & Louise Minchin/Emily Maitlis
Five Hour: Huw Edwards or Gavin Esler
Evenings: Ben Brown & Joanna Gosling
Late Nights: Chris Eakin
Weekends: Maxine Mawhinney, Tim Wilcox, Nicholas Owen, Chris Lowe, Annita McVeigh, Peter Sissons
Overnight: Alastair Yates, Deborah Mackenzie, Martine Croxall, Karin Giannone

Couldn’t beat it.
It was a good era, I agree. Helped in no small part, I think, by Sky News' constant chopping and changing their schedule during that period, not to mention the Sky-Virgin dispute - making News 24 look much more stable in comparison.

Not sure Peter Sissons ever quite suited rolling news, though, bless him. He should have stayed on the 10 for much longer than he did. Or moved to World, which was still largely fixed bulletins back then.

I think it was some of Peter’s little quirks and comments he’d make that made him so fun to watch. Also his strong sense of authority. I do agree he wasn’t the greatest at breaking news itself though with things changing all the time, and always seemed happier and more comfortable on straight bulletins with a fixed running order.

I think Julia Somerville was another old school presenter who was the same as Peter. Others though, such as Chris Lowe, Philip Hayton, Nicholas Owen and Fiona Armstrong, all seemed to take to it much better.

This quirky comment springs to mind.

The daytime backdrop was tweaked to add some blue at some point in 2009. Looked much better and less clinical.

And Gwenan Edwards before that.

My favourite memory of Chris Lowe was on Saturday evenings in the very early 2000s when News 24 would regularly read out the National Lottery winning numbers. Without fail, every week, Chris would always tear up his lottery ticket and throw it up in the air!

They did. Joanna Gosling was originally on the weekday morning shift with Philip Hayton. Phil only used to do Saturday afternoons on News 24 as he used to present weekday evenings on BBC World. In 2001, Mishal Husain became his replacement on World and Phil moved to weekday mornings on News 24.

Prior to Philip Hayton, Joanna worked with Ben Geoghegan on News 24 weekday mornings.

I didn't realise that Stuart Flinders of the BBC North West Parish popped up nationally.
