RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - Worzel - 11-04-2023

At 12pm we were back with the short bodged Chameleon titles and new wipes between headlines.

The titles were even more jarring as Lucy Hockings is on location in Belfast and there was no wide shot available.

They will be back to the old titles by 2pm or whenever the next shift is, it makes no sense, they did say Lucy was gonna get a branded show maybe that’s why the titles are different?

RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - Transmission - 11-04-2023

So this afternoon we've just had presumably UK-only coverage of the junior doctors' strike. It's good, in-depth coverage with a lot of guests, explainers and regional contributions. But it's only about this one subject, there's no other stories at all, which is exactly what you'd expect if you click on the front page of iPlayer where it says "Junior Doctors in England on Strike" but perhaps not if you tune into the BBC News channel where the EPG just says "BBC News".

Not sure I feel about it, the coverage itself was good and it's exactly in that spot of "important to the UK but not at all to the rest of the world". Given it's not a fast-developing story, any longer would have felt far too long, so going to World Buisness Report at 14:30 felt about right. It's a better way of getting UK news on the channel than some of the others they're doing, at least.

I'm not sure if there's been a non-holiday weekday that the "breaking news team" haven't put anything out so far?

Apparently the reason Lucy’s slot has new titles is that, inexplicably, only studio C has access to them. As for her getting a branded show, I can only imagine that whoever wrote that Deadline article somehow got her mixed up with Christian Fraser.

Yes it’s very strange, only one story, no TOTH, countdowns or headlines (that I’ve seen). An (unwritten?) rule of the breakout team? Or just a function of not having all the resources to manage the channel completely like the world team can.

Also anyone else notice the presenters audio sounds like she’s in a busy coffee shop (well, a busy news room)? Whereas most of the reports have good audio.

That is how it works now - the breakouts for the UK will all be 'single story news streams' rather than UK-focused news bulletins. The aim is they are specifically focused on the one story and used across all channels.

Indeed, it came back at 14:45 after World Buisness Report (with the stream version showing live shots from Trafalgar Square while that was on) and just ended at 15:30 with the first weather forecast since the News at 1.

Interesting video. We've seen with the Trump one that sometimes these streams will go on for hours online-only without being on the broadcast channel, but for UK stories it seems they always go out on the channel domestically.

They've been fairly good at doing that from the ones I've seen - certainly one aspect of the relaunch that has been better than expected, with some of mine and other's early scepticism about them ageing badly. That said, and while I do understand they are designed as multi-media streams on one story, I do think that when they do run for hours on end or cover live events that are delayed, there is some justification for throwing in a short summary of other news during quiet bits.

BBC "World" were running the Junior Doctors story too with much more panache/presentational flair in some circumstances, while also covering important stories like Biden in Northern Ireland.

Doesn't the single story news stream concept just mean a smaller team covering the same story with fewer resources? To boot it's alienating viewers that aren't interested in that story at all. Not a good fit for a news channel imo.

RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - steve - 11-04-2023

But I think the argument goes (reasonably, imho) that there aren’t many viewers who are just sat watching news channels. Majority of viewing is transient and linked to events - so it makes sense to focus on that event and that event alone. I can see the sense in that.

As all the commentary from the BBC bosses has said about the new channel, it’s no longer about giving summaries of the news with report after report. And it’s hard to argue against the fact that we find out what’s happening today mostly from places other than television.

As I’ve said before, and I know it’s not a popular view among many here, the concept for the new channel makes sense to me. The execution has been wanting in many cases, but the direction is a reasonable one.
