That's not just your suspicions, the original press release announcing it explicitly said it would "offer viewers a fast-moving, conversational show, featuring a blend of political interviews, discussion and video content designed to be shared digitally".

Awful programme. But the thing that annoys me most is that Politics UK, which is produced by the same team, is a perfect example of public service broadcasting and exactly what BBC Politics output should be doing - so they can clearly do better, just are ordered or choose not to.

On Monday, the channel was leading on a minor British political scandal and later the Madeleine McCann case - spending the best part of ten minutes on the very UK-based stories during the half-hours I caught. The other day, it was leading on Schofield. While you're right that BBC News is no longer made solely for a UK audience, the idea that it is neglecting major UK news isn't particularly credible. Plus, where international news has taken precedence it has almost always been editorially justifiable, which isn't something I would say of the times UK news has taken precedence.

As others have said, Turner's death would have been a main story on the old News channel anyway - it's a slow news day and it never had a problem covering entertainment news, particularly obituaries.

Would coverage have been any different on the old channel, though? It is a big story, international or not.

...and the in memoriam slide was still there at 2154! 


It finally disappeared when the BBC Sport bulletin eventually started a couple of seconds later.

It appears they are rolling with DeSantis coverage into the next hour, without cutting off at :56. May be that is the reason to start at 22:30 with Singapore, to avoid the switch.

Exactly, she was Swiss towards the end of her life (and never lost her popularity on the continent). So it really is 'world news'. Considering the channel was leading with Schofield's resignation on Saturday, which is of zero interest to anyone outside the UK (as well as many people in the UK), I don't think them leading with Tina Turner's passing tonight is anything to get worked up about. Think about how Michael Jackson's death dominated news bulletins. Same rules apply here.

The death of an international music icon warrants continuous coverage - to a degree - on the rolling news channels; the same was done - in 2016 - with David Bowie, Prince and George Michael.

I don't think any of the earlier posts were actually saying the coverage of the Tina Turner news was unjustified, if anything it was mainly praise. Perhaps people are just used to that being the topic of discussion after showbiz-related news recently!

On the subject of Politics Live, certainly I've seen the merged channel attempt to use it for PMQs. A few Wednesdays ago at 11:50ish, I think after a sports bulletin, the channel cut to Jo Coburn looking at the camera clearly waiting to say "welcome to viewers on the News channel" but all you could hear were two guests shouting at each other. After about two minutes of their "debate", the UK opt broke in to cover a speech in the Lords and then got back to the Commons for PMQs. So it wasn't really worth bothering at the time and made for bizarre viewing.
