This would actually be good and Shaun Ley does both know his stuff and is able to explain things without sounding patronising, which hasn't always been the case with BBC election night co-presenters.

They used clips of Dimbleby announcing results for the 2016 Brexit referendum and the exit poll of the 2017 General Election, but for the 2019 General Election they used a radio clip for the exit poll and no studio clips of Huw announcing any results, just clips of Laura doing analysis.
Huw has been front and centre of news coverage of the political chaos since 2016 but not one clip of him has appeared on the program.

Plus there was the incident this weekend on Breakfast where an old episode of Newswatch was played out by mistake and as soon as Huw appeared they hastily took the program off, blaming "technical gremlins".
I don't think Huw appearing on Newswatch was the reason it was pulled off air, more the fact it was seven years old and the wrong episode. Huw appearing may have been the trigger that made someone realise it was the wrong episode but beyond that I have a couple of straws for you to clutch.

On an unrelated note, the Dan Wootton story is currently the top story on the BBC News website and was the lead on the BBC News channel. Why? Once again, this feels like a media-related story is being given undue prominence because it's what interests people in the media - even more so than Lineker, Schofield or Edwards, given that Wootton just isn't a household name in any respect. I just don't know how this could possibly be viewed as the most important story, even just in the UK.

Dan Wootton as the top world news story. BBC reaching new lows, with each new day....

At least GB News can't claim they're ignored by other media anymore...

In all seriousness - that's not even a worthy domestic lead.

There does seem to have been a shift towards more tabloid news (without wanting to sound snobby!). It think it was a couple of days ago towards the end of the first half hour was a story about a 80 something year old American actress who had come out of hospital after hip surgery ending with them being wished well. I cant recall a story like that accept maybw during a  news in brief section

RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - Independent - 28-09-2023

I've given up on watching the BBC so it's good to know I'm not missing any quality journalism by not watching the channel. The TV channel for world viewers is tabloid (it started a while back but could just tolerate it then but unbearable post-merger), limited in stories and painfully slow.
The website and app are equally appalling as the 'news' channel. Who Taylor Swift is dating as the second top story? Are you kidding me?
France 24 and AJE offer much more superior alternatives. It's a waste of time to watch the BBC 'News' channel or use the app/website to get informed. Though they're excellent if you want to have a good laugh especially the app/website.

Not really pres-related, and not quite BBC News channel-related -- but just thought I'd share this remarkable story from Le Monde (link at end of post) about BBC journalists helping to save the lives of several migrants in France yesterday.

Journalists on the BBC Vietnamese Service working in London received a message yesterday morning from one of their sources, a Vietnamese woman. Along with several other women, she said she was travelling secretly in the back of a refrigerated truck somewhere in France. During their journey, the refrigeration had been switched on, the temperature had plummeted, and they were beginning to struggle with their breathing. They also seemed to be going to the wrong destination, and they couldn't escape through the locked doors of the truck. They were starting to panic.

The journalists realised the need to act fast, and immediately contacted French police, and relayed the GPS coordinates shared by one of the women. Police were soon able to locate the truck, and saved the women before they came to any lasting harm (they remain in holding while their immigration status is reviewed).

Kudos to the journos for their quick actions. (Also: long live the World Service. ✊🏼)

I suspect there may be a few factors at play.

Firstly, there's promotion of BBC's own programmes. His comments related to a discussion that took place on the BBC's Politics Live programme. It also gave them chance to show a clip of Ava Evans' reaction to the events, which was being recorded for an upcoming episode of the BBC's Newscast.

Secondly, there's a chance to criticise a rival news channel, which a number of politicians seem to favour based on some presenting on it. A small reminder of their quality journalism and the benefits of the licence fee funding perhaps.

Thirdly, the individuals involved. I wouldn't be surprised if Wootton has managed irritate and/or frustrate a number of journalists and reporters up the wrong way, given his years in the tabloids and TV. This is something that the can safely report on, without having to worry to much about either his lawyers or needing to run it past someone higher up first. Whilst Laurence Fox doesn't have the same press background he's also well known for his controversial opinions.

Thankfully this morning on Breakfast it was reduced to a brief mention in the middle of the news bulletin.

As you say the fact that it mentioned The Andrew Marr Show and Prime Minister Theresa May might have been the major giveaways, and it was just the timing that Huw appeared directly before they switched back to the studio.
