Is it me or is it really noisy in today using the newsroom set? It feels really noticeable today. If rather they got rid of that stupid newsroom background and actually use the newsroom as the background. You’d accept the noise a bit more as you’d think well they are in the newsroom.

In some cases the live streams are good, especially when you have someone anchoring it. However, the Drakeford announcement streams felt a bit silly as it was just his announcement looped.

I’ve not seen this person presenting today. Is she new?

I’ve seen her a few times but only on the uk opt. Not sure of her name. She does seem very new.

They did an abrupt uk opt for Drakeford when world viewers were on a break. I think it shows how there’s not much communication between the studio and the balcony. Ben Thompson could have handed over to the drakeford news conference but that didn’t happen .

Her name is Catherine Byaruhanga. She's appeared since about September mainly on the UK opts but also on the World feed in the mornings and at weekends. I think it was said at the time she'd landed one of the "presenter - correspondent" posts.

The way they opt in and out of the UK feed is still akin to someone switching channels on my remote control for me. Sometimes they even opt out with that Breaking News sting in the middle of a report, which to be honest makes me jump a little.

I couldn't observe a pattern though on under what circumstances will they take it live or tape-delayed... Often times when they take Newsnight live, it doesn't seem like there's a big story on that night. The decision feels random to me...

This doesn’t happen. If it did happen at one time, that’s a very long time ago.

Newsnight is now taken live. If the Ten starts late and/or overruns the start time of Newsnight, the UK stream leaves the Ten at a suitable point, filling with trails or a countdown and joins Newsnight as it starts on BBC Two. Some nights it’s easier to do this cleanly than other nights.

Same with Newsnight into Newsday.

RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - DTV - 14-12-2023

I'm never sure what's most surprising about the dodgy Newsnight simulcast - that it has remained this long or somebody thought it was a good idea in the first place. Though, I guess it's not the only or most prominent example of the 'sure, that'll do' attitude to how the channel should work.

I still stand by my view that, if sticking to simulcasts, a Reporting Scotland, Wales Today, Newsline triple bill would be a better use of the 22:30 slot. For most viewers, it's an actual alternative; devolved political and policy stories are undercovered on UK-wide news anyway; and surely an easy of meeting the 'more regional news' obligation (and better than those crappy Around the UK segments).

RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - Brekkie - 14-12-2023

The issue with Newsnight has always been the Ten rarely finishing before it starts. It could do if they neatened things up, but won't. That's partly why I thought it's move to 10.45 during covid actually benefitted Newsnight.

The 10:45 time also worked better for news-hungry viewers, as you could continue watching the local news on BBC One after the Ten and then switch over at the end of that to see Newsnight. It worked rather well, and meant BBC Two had slightly longer free in their evening schedule.

I agree there, I thought Newsnight in a 10:45pm slot worked quite well during COVID, so moving to that time should be permament imo.

RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - interestednovice - 14-12-2023

I saw the UK opt early covering the BoE announcement on interest rates. It was done pretty well (another slightly dodgy framing of the newsroom screen, but it can be forgiven).

The opt started straight after a sport update, which was fine, but ended at 12:15 which was just a crash back into Lucy Hockings on the global feed, mid-sentence.

I just have to ask why they now don’t say something like “We will now join my colleague, Lucy Hockings, for coverage of other stories in the headlines this afternoon”.

Instead, it was just a fallback to the classic: “Your watching, BBC News”.

In a related point, why does the global feed gallery seem to be totally unaware of when then U.K. opt is going to “come back” to them? It would be much better if they could rejoin after a sting or clean opt point, if possible.

RE: BBC News Pres: Apr 2023 - Present (News Channel/BBC One) - oscillon - 14-12-2023

At 2pm there appears to be an unusually multi-itemed (NHS, BoE, Putin) opt-out with Azadeh Moshiri presenting and a little bit botched intro (looong delay after the headlines before the intro itself)
