Very surprised that they are going to broadcast it
I think it would look really bad if they didn’t show it given that it’s been broadcast in most other European countries and Ireland is on much better terms with the UK then in the past despite Brexit. They’ve also broadcast Royal Weddings and Funerals in the past including Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral last year which Ray Kennedy also hosted.

It is a once in a lifetime event and whatever the political history between the UK and ROI RTE as the state broadcaster would be remiss in not showing it.

Well.. Once in a lifetime for Charles, we will see another coronation in around 20 years at a guess.

Now that I think about it, Television came to the Republic of Ireland on New Year's Eve 1961, so this Is going to be the first Coronation that will ever be broadcast on TV in Ireland!

Unless of course there were viewers who could get BBC NI from Divis in 1953? Was there a temporary mast set up in NI for both the state funeral of King George VI and the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II?

RE: Coronation of King Charles III - London Lite - 28-04-2023

The Coronation is being aired in France on both TF1 and France 2, alongside the rolling news channels.

TF1 coverage starts at 9am local time with Anne-Claire Coudray and Gilles Bouleau followed by a documentary about a supposed duel between Kate and Meghan in typical trashy TF1 style.

France 2 coverage starts at 9.20am local time with Julian Bugier followed by a Stephane Bern programme looking back at previous Royal weddings.

Not so, Charles was 4 when his mother was crowned

Yes, there was no TV in NI at that time, so a temporary relay was set up for the Coronation which retransmitted the signal from Scotland. Divis opened in 1955. There was a lot more notice for the coronation than there was for the Kings funeral of course.

See page 4 onwards for details:

Pontop Pike near Newcastle was brought into service for the Coronation, as was a temporary relay in Brighton, Truleigh Hill

Any hints on whether we should expect any special idents on the BBC at least. Think their first Coronation programme is a documentary tomorrow night so it could debut then.

RE: Coronation of King Charles III - JMT1985 - 29-04-2023

RTE were always going to air the coronation - the relationship between the Republic of Ireland and the UK has changed beyond belief since 1953 - just look at the late Queen's visit to Ireland in 2011, and how well received she was, especially when she honoured the Irish dead in their Garden of Remembrance and she said a line in Irish at the state dinner, unthinkable gestures even in the 1990s.

Brexit may have ruined a lot of things, but the relationship between the UK and Republic of Ireland has always been strong in recent years.

RTE of course have little cash, so staying in Studio 3 at RTE and taking the BBC feed is probably their cheapest option, than renting a small studio in London, or even having a temporary studio near the abbey.

Television signals from Northern Ireland were very hard to receive in Dublin and most parts of the Irish republic in 1953. Remember that Belfast transmitter opened in May 1953 was always to be temporary. Maybe viewers (if there were any who could afford it back then) in Dundalk for example might have been lucky to pick up a weak signal.

It wouldn't be until the Divis transmitter opened in July 1955 that the Irish republic had any possibility of receiving BBC signals way down south, well into Dublin - the Dublin city landscape by the late 50s was famous for having HUGE aerials erected on chimney's and tops of houses, to the point it actually caused problems for airplanes landing and taking off at Dublin airport.

Spill over signal from VHF and later UHF transmissions was always interesting, I am surprised those signals got into the republic so much, but according to some articles, by the early 1960s, over 65% of the Irish republic were able to receive both BBC and UTV from Northern Ireland, or BBC and ITV Wales (TWW later Harlech) from Wales.
