RE: Coronation of King Charles III - thegeek - 20-04-2023

I'm not aware of anyone having done Audio Description (through the usual AD audio tracks) on a live programme, never mind it being a first for ITV - in fact I'm curious to know how they're doing it, because I've previously searched for some kit that can generate the control track and come up blank...

It’s exactly like having an English feed and a Welsh feed. Austria does it for Eurovision - viewers get the option of listening to the TV commentary or the radio commentary.

it's not exactly like that. Viewers who rely on AD expect it to always be available in the same way - ie as a feature they can enable in the menus on their STB or TV. This is particularly important for blind or partially sighted people who might have to have someone else set it up for them.

I know there are other ways to deliver alternate audios - for example, the DVB spec allows for different language soundtracks (which again, you'd access through menus in your STB), but I'm not aware of any UK broadcaster using these, and they probably don't have an easy method to transmit audio that way.

The BBC (and S4C?) have used a red button MHEG/OpenTV selector for alternate commentaries, which certainly used to boot you off into an SD red button stream. I don't think ITV have ever done this before though.

Maybe they do have something up their sleeves, but as Brekkie said above, anyone who's previously done live AD has had to use another channel for it. None of this should detract from the fact that they're making the effort in the first place however - I'm pleased to see more broadcasters recognising its importance.

I really like Alastair Bruce on Sky News - every time I see him comment on royal events, I feel like I am being taught by a distinguished history professor - his knowledge knows no bounds, he really does bring gravitas to royal events, whereas BBC and ITV royal correspondents simply don't reach that level that Alastair does.

GMB at 6am on Saturday.

One takeaway from this presser is that it appears Julie Etchingham will be the lead presenter of the coverage of the coronation for ITV, whereas Tom lead ITV's coverage of the funeral of the late Queen. A minor but interesting point.

I agree. Alastair was fantastic during the Jubilee last year and many other occasions.

I will be watching ITV but I watched Sky last year for the Jubilee as ITV sadly didn’t have rolling live coverage.

Is a certain irony given how often C4 and especially C5 do royal documentaries that they'll largely ignore it live. I think C4 showed the Queens Coronation when she died so I wouldn't be surprised if that gets an outing again.

Channel 5 are way more obsessed with the royals than Channel 4 - just look at any Saturday prime time Channel 5 schedule, and it is usually cluttered with the usual rehashed documentaries about the royals (or about BBC sitcoms which seems to be another obsession they have)
