RE: BT Sport - thegeek - 08-06-2023

I loved the opener last night - featuring a 10 year old who was vox-popped by West Ham TV outside the stadium after the first leg of the semi-final.

They finished the show with a bit of 'U Can't Touch This'. Of course.

I think that was S+V's last production for the channel too. I'm not sure how many of the production teams are moving over to WBD, but hopefully they'll be able to keep things as entertaining and fan-focussed.  Covering the football is the easy bit - it's what goes around it that keeps your viewers watching and makes a success of a channel

meanwhile, looking ahead in the schedules, it looks like the last OB that BT Sport do as BT Sport will be the MLB from London Stadium. Which is a nice way of bringing things full circle, as the launch programme started with a helicopter shot of Jake on the pitch. (IIRC not live, but recorded a few hours earlier).

I’ll be honest the ESPN/BT Sport 4 channel is the one I watch the least, but it seemed to have stuck true to its original values of US sports from its schedules. Shame to see it go in that regard.

I noticed they were on screen animations for TNT Sports during the Conference League Final itself last night, I would expect to see more of this come Saturday night.
Yes, it will be 10 years to the day. Clearly it’s no coincidence that Discovery has planned the timing for this rebrand in such a way - they obviously decided not to renew the ESPN deal, and are then ditching the BT name at the same time as the bouquet of channels “evolves”.

BT Sport has very much been a continuation of ESPN’s service, as you say. Even using the name BT Sport // ESPN back in the early days, right through to simulcasting content from ESPN US on occasion to this day.

There was a similar adjustment 10 years ago, don’t forget, as ESPN America and ESPN Classic were axed. Really, content from ESPN itself became part of the BT Sport numbered channels, ESPN America became BT Sport ESPN and only ESPN Classic was “lost”. This time, potentially much more content will be lost. But that fits with Discovery’s cost-cutting approach.

RE: BT Sport - Brekkie - 08-06-2023

Wonder if the brand could live on in the UK via Disney+, or if the content will form a part of this new joint venture even if not under ESPN branding.

RE: BT Sport - Rdd - 08-06-2023

The ESPN brand will be still be seen, on various US sports coverage across a number of channels, including ESPN Monday Night Football on Sky.

I’m more worried about the content, which was mostly college sports, MLB as noted came separately. It’s very niche and it worked well having a designated home, be that NASN, ESPN America, BT Sport ESPN, and finally BT Sport 4 (I know in recent times BT had spread it a bit more around their four channels). Most of it probably won’t be picked up by any other broadcaster. Maybe the college football stuff might, even then I can’t see that anyone else would give it the breadth of coverage we got with BT and it’s predecessors.

You can’t really compare with the loss of ESPN Classic though, that was almost entirely archive stuff, aside from some fairly rare use as overspill.

RE: BT Sport - Brekkie - 09-06-2023

Niche, but with a loyal audience, could probably work well for something like DAZN.

True, the only “loss” last time was ESPN Classic, and even then BT’s deal with ESPN included the rights to much of it, so the content was sometimes seen on various BT Sport channels as filler.

Actual new live sport, as you say, didn’t air on ESPN Classic so it mattered much less that archive content wasn’t routinely aired as it had such a niche appeal.

The production is all out in Istanbul so I think this'll probably just be seen in Peter Walton's referee inserts.

RE: BT Sport - thegeek - 10-06-2023

It's one incredibly fancy down-the-line camera position.

Most of the production is indeed on-site in Istanbul this evening (with some edits and analysis back in Stratford) - it appears the studio position is next door to CBS:

RE: BT Sport - Brekkie - 10-06-2023

Is the final on CBS itself?

We know they'll be changes presenter wise for TNT Sports so wonder if they'll be keen to refresh their flagship punditry line up too.
