I don’t see any mention of a reduction of channels in the Hollywood Reporter article.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't an add-on, so Discovery+ is the basic tier then you have Discovery+ Sport on top - though where they place Eurosport for now remains to be seen.

It's worth noting too that WBD have in the last couple of weeks abandoned plans to merge HBO Max and Discovery+ as they just couldn't work out a solution to the different price points (HBO Max costs twice as much).    I guess ultimately it'll end up similar to NOW where you have different memberships dependent on the content you want.

I know this is wishful thinking, but I kinda wish Eurosport would recreate their first "final moment" before they merge with BT Sport to become TNT Sports.

If they do, I hope the 'behind the scenes' people get more than the cursory thanks they did in that credit roll!

RE: BT Sport - Rdd - 28-02-2023

They were back up and running a week and a half later, as if they’d never been away, of course they didn’t know that at the time. But it isn’t really the end for them, they’ll still be going outside of the U.K. and Ireland, whenever the rebrand does occur.

As of this August TNT Sports and Eurosport U.K./Irl will still be essentially separate offerings, albeit under the one roof. Full integration it seems will wait till later.

Just seen a promo on BT Sport for ‘The Home of Bikes’ which is a cross promotion for BT Sport, Eurosport and Discovery+

RE: BT Sport - interestednovice - 09-03-2023

Interesting, I’d have thought it would make sense to launch the TNT brand and then advertise TNT as “available through Discovery+” with TNT being the home of bikes! Otherwise it’s all just a bit messy, especially given that they are promoting brands which Discovery have already decided to axe, so it makes no sense.

I’m a bit late to the thread, so apologies if my thoughts below are a bit out of date.

I suppose the Eurosport brand, while long-running, never quite resonated that well in the UK. It always seemed very much in a “second tier” of sports channels, not the big names like Sky Sports or even BT Sport that probably come to mind if you ask people what sports channels are available. I gather that’s not so much the case in the rest of Europe.

It was also a pretty generic generic name and, quite problematically, if you were not familiar with the brand you may assume that the channels showed “European Sport” only (i.e. La Liga, Serie A and so on) rather than the wealth of content they actually shows. Brands which project a misleading image like that are quite problematic and difficult to market, and I can see why Discovery would not have wanted to retain the BT name either (royalties to BT) plus BT’s own probable reluctance as they look to reposition EE as their primary consumer brand. So neither existing brand works and I can understand how it would have been appealing to start with a “clean slate” using TNT. Even though it isn’t well known, as it’s an existing brand they won’t have issues with trademarks, etc and will be able to presumably save money by potentially sharing presentational elements and idents. We’ll have to see how the rebranding unfolds!

It varies, but many of the sports covered by Eurosport are less niche in other countries than they are here in the UK. Wintersports being huge in the Nordics and Alpine regions for example.

Many countries also have their own well established free-to-air sports channels, (best examples I can think of straight away are tdp in Spain and TVP Sport in Poland) so Eurosport isn't thought of as the lowest tier sports channel in those markets.

RE: BT Sport - interestednovice - 10-03-2023

That makes sense, and also makes it appear logical that we will no longer use the brand but mainland Europe will.

It probably does make sense to unify the two sets of UK sports channels by having a new brand for both too, so there is no favouritism of one set of viewers over the others.

RE: BT Sport - simon - 10-03-2023

Noticed that Sky Sports showed the (US) TNT coverage of the NBA last night... including the TNT pre-game show.

That'll be awfully confusing for the casual viewer once BT Sport has become TNT Sports!

RE: BT Sport - Rdd - 10-03-2023

They’ve been showing ESPN coverage of various US sports (NFL and NBA) for years, including throughout the period ESPN U.K. and BT Sport ESPN existed and I don’t think it caused any confusion?
