RE: BBC Breakfast (June 2023 - Present) - Brekkie - 09-11-2023

I guess the extra 15 minutes would likely be an additional run through the top stories at 9am and then pushing the final feature back to fill the last few minutes.

Suspect it could be something like that, allowing them to take out the 30' slot from the morning schedule, ending up with something like this:

06:00 Breakfast
09:30 Morning Live
10:30 Various 45' programmes
11:15 Homes Under the Hammer
12:15 Bargain Hunt
13:00 News at One

Alternatively, I suppose they could move Bargain Hunt to 60' edits as standard and keep the 30' slot, but presumably they'll end up doing that to Escape to the Country (once Doctors is axed and if News at One is extended) and too many 60' shows might slow things down a bit too much? But clearly looking to eliminate two slots from the daytime schedule.

It'll be interesting to see what the News Channel does once this change comes into effect, whether they continue the simulcast of Nicky Campbell or opt to take Breakfast until 9.30am.

If they continue to opt-out of Breakfast at 9am, then it would make sense for the last regional news update to be moved to just before 9am. This would then give the News Channel a way to opt-out smoothly, and ensures they're not having to interrupt any interviews to play a sting.

If they decide to continue showing Breakfast until 9.30am then it does raise questions over the future of the 5Live simulcast. In theory they could opt to simulcast Nicky Campbell from 10-11am, though I don't think that would benefit either 5Live listeners or News Channel viewers. In theory, the News Channel could opt to put a pre-recorded programme in the 9.30-10am slot on the global feed, similar to pre-merger. That would then allow them to have news coverage on the UK feed, which could count towards the UK opt-out/hours quota.

I suspect the NC will still opt-out at 09:00 as I don't see Nicky Campbell being axed this early, even if it is clear that the channel has lost confidence in the programme. I would expect there to be some kind of formal review of the channel after 12/18 months and any major programming or scheduling changes will wait for that to finish.

I do see a minor reconfiguration of the Breakfast timetable (i.e., the 09:00 TOTH being made more regular) happening though.

I think the move is as much about filling that hour on the news channel as it is BBC1.  Half hour filler then news at 10am would work well enough for the channel.   I don't think Nicky Campbell would see it as an axe - think it's a simulcast nobody involved in really wants.

Really? I’d have thought it more coincides with the BBC axing Doctors, and potentially looking to move one of the morning daytime shows to after the News at One to fill the schedule without raising the budget.

Adding an extra 15 minutes to Breakfast potentially just means dragging out a few segments/interviews and some extra headlines - in other words, potentially no more ‘production’ needed.

This is exactly my understanding; longer form 'discussions' and extra time for studio guests.

That's easy to say, but the Breakfast audience dips in and out after about 5 minutes. Dragging out segments will have people turning to alternative services with a shorter format.

Not sure that's so true after 9am.

Morning live could be extended further to 11.15/11.30 to pick up some of This Mornings viewers?
