They were some letters in a box - hardly the high point of graphic design, although it's beauty was in it's simplicity. At the time though the new logos looked so bland in comparison to what they were replacing too, and other than the balloon the surrounding presentation wasn't exactly exciting either - the initial radio logos especially looked awful.

We don't need to go to extremes on this though - it served the BBC well for nearly a quarter of a century and the new version would be able to do the same.

One of the reasons it worked so well though is because the day it came in that presentation wise at least on the day the logo came in the old one went out, other than on endcaps on shows made before the change was implemented.    The fact this time around the old logo is still so prominent two years later in some presentation elements (particularly politics) and still being used on programmes filmed long after the logo was introduced is why the change isn't as effective as it should be - and that's nothing to do with the design, it's all about the execution - and frankly there is no excuse for it.

See another political year begins and BBC Politics Live are still using the Gills Sans logo. Surely that should be the simplest of updates.

EastEnders is still using the old logo on its titles as well

I did think they could have used the summer recess to update the scrolling background in the set.

However, we all know the title sequence will of course become 'PowerPoint red circles' when they get round to changing it, so no rush there. Confused

BBC Parliament is back after simulcasting with BBC News over the summer, but it still has the gill sans logo unfortunately.

BBC Earth has rebranded - finally!
https://www.marketing-beat.co.uk/2023/09/12/bbc-earth-window-to-the-world/

According to the Australian press release (that I couldn't find), new graphics are done by the in-house Creative team:
Quote:BBC Studios Creative team is headed up by Executive Creative Director, Nick Meikle, who said: “We wanted to elevate the heritage of the circular device within the current brand, to give it real purpose and dimension. The core brand idea is a “Window to the World”. A circular window that represents the Earth and the infinite wonder it has to offer. It is a visual mechanic that seeks to relentlessly discover immersive moments, bringing spectacular stories into the homes of our audience, creating an emotional connection to our planet, and connecting them to the world at large. The brand refresh also gave us the opportunity to unify the visual language across all touch points from this central idea, as the brand has evolved significantly since its original TV launch over eight years ago.”

Worldwide rollout starts 14/9.

Ooh that’s weird the trailers start off with a very tiny bbc earth logo middle top then it disappears revolving to the familiar chameleon end board and then the BBC and the EARTH part move to the centre into the circle I am sure that’s broken a few rules already, all the other channels at 13e bbc first, lifestyle and cbeebies still old logo.

How can you watch these channels BTW? Are you subscribed to some foreign pay TV? Because I would love to know how you do it, I want to have a look at these channels myself
