ITV will use the 2022 Fifa World Cup to launch the replacement for ITV Hub, the streaming platform notorious for infuriating football fans left staring at frozen screens.

Viewers welcomed ITV’s announcement that the Hub, derided for its unwelcome habit of crashing during live events, will be scrapped this autumn.

The commercial broadcaster has invested £160m in replacement on-demand service ITVX, built with a “completely new technical and user-experience architecture.”

New dramas will premiere on ITVX nine months before running on the broadcast ITV channel, and viewers are promised 9,000 hours of content, including 300 blockbuster movies.

Sport will be a key attraction on the new platform. In a risky move, ITV plans to launch ITVX to coincide with the World Cup, which begins on November 20, with a major marketing campaign targeting football fans.

- The corporate logo isn't changing.

- Idents will be cross-channel. The same set of locations are used across all channels. Each channel has its own twist on the scene, which stems directly from the channel's tone of voice. The channel logo swipes or manipulates the camera or scene with gestures. The majority of people are either far away or shown in motion passing the camera. CGI is used wherever possible. There are 25 idents in total - they've all been filmed.

- The "ITV 1" brand is returning. There has been confusion about "ITV" as a masterbrand and "ITV" as a broadcast channel.

- The ITV Reem font is being replaced.

- The new typeface has lots of different weights and families - every channel will have its own version of this typeface.

- The numeral element of each of the broadcast channels will be displayed in the new font.

- Trail endboards will follow a similar design on each channel, albeit different colouring/versions of the new typeface.

- Swipe effects will be a common element on the broadcast channels.

- ITV 1: Human, Optimistic, Welcoming, Massive, Collective.

- ITV 2: Human, Optimistic, Welcoming, Irreverent, OTT.

- ITV 3: Human, Optimistic, Welcoming, Classy, Intriguing.

- ITV 4: Human, Optimistic, Welcoming, No Nonsense, Fanatical.

- ITVBe: Human, Optimistic, Welcoming, Gregarious, Gossipy.

- ITVX: Human, Optimistic, Welcoming, Dynamic, Alive.

- On screen changes expected on 3rd November.

- CITV will be looked at separately - possibly from early 2023.

- No plans to fundamentally change ITV News branding - possibly some font adjustments in the coming months.
As ITV Reem is being replaced (though still a fantastic font) I wonder when it'll be released as a general font on Fontsmith as it's coming up to ten years since its debut. I remember reading on TV Forum that Channel 4's bespoke font (now FS Untitled) reached the end of its ten-year exclusivity. I wonder if it could mean the same for ITV? Whatever happens it's all very exciting.

RE: ITV (Wider Group) Branding - Blubatt - 04-10-2022

I echo the sentiments shared by other users. The idents being the same premise on all the channels, with different outcomes, is actually something that I don't think has been done before (I imagine I will be corrected). The name ITV1 doesn't bother me though. I get why it bothered people in 2001/2002 when they changed the name the first time around (with the regions still being used and named on screen). I don't think that's a big problem now.

RE: ITV (Wider Group) Branding - CATV - 04-10-2022

The idents sound like the same concept as SKY 1 - Solid, SKY 2 - Liquid, SKY 3 - Gas idents from 2008?

RE: ITV (Wider Group) Branding - Andrew Wood - 04-10-2022

Was about to say the same, but in that case, the ident was essentially the same. These ITV ones sound a bit different.

Sorrywhatpardon!? 9 months before broadcast TV?

Is this another case of 'trying to be like Netflix'?

I get that they want people watch ITVX but why nine months?!

RE: ITV (Wider Group) Branding - Gavin25 - 04-10-2022

Will the UTV promotion which UTV use for Local Programmes be updated ?

RE: ITV (Wider Group) Branding - NancerInTheCafe - 04-10-2022

I don't blame them at all for wanting to return to ITV1. And for those complaining about how the 1 doesn't work in the digital era... I don't see you complaining about BBC One.

It’ll still be new content to those who don’t use ITV Hub, the same amount of content will still have to be made. Not sure what the issue is.
