Irish TV News Discussion 2.0

There's usually the main newsreader and the sports newsreader doing the headlines for the start of the weekend Six-One bulletin.

Has that omission start to become a recent trend from cutbacks in RTÉ or is just a one off event?

It was a one off. The Six-One news was five minutes shorter than usual with no ad break also. It was shorter to facilitate the 65 minute long “Marty Whelan’s Eurovision Legends” at 6.55pm ahead of the Eurovision starting at 8pm.

It has been a very busy Six-One news on RTÉ One today.

The top story was the 50th anniversary of the Dublin & Monaghan bombings.

Sharon Tobin gave us a great presentation about the bombings to lead into the report being done by North East Correspondent Laura Hogan.

The Six-One News is also focusing on Ireland South European elections today. David McCullough is interviewing six political party candidates in Clonmel Co. Tipperary ahead of the Euro elections on June 7th. Cynthia Ni Murichu was one of the six candidates interviewed today. She used to present the 1994 Eurovision Song Contest with the late Gerry Ryan. She is contesting for a seat in the European Elections with Fiánna Fail on June 7th.

There will be an extended debate programme with Upfront with Katie Hannon this Monday night on RTÉ One.

The debate will take place in Mary Immaculate College in Limerick.

It will have candidates going for the election of the new directly elected Mayor of Limerick which will take place on June 7th.

All 15 candidates have been invited to take part in the debate. Although they will be split up in 2 separate groups for it's duration.

European and local election coverage this weekend on RTE has been a bit sporadic, due to the nature of the count (and the rule which means no declarations in the European elections before Sunday 10pm) but there is coverage on RTE One now, graphics don’t look terribly different (if at all) from recent elections as far back as 2020.
