UTV-branded idents disappeared over 2-and-a-half years ago - and were confirmed not to be returning almost 2 years ago.

"UTV as a channel" is no more "dead and buried" today than it was in 2020.

The switch to ITV 1 branding today means virtually nothing to UTV viewers and poses no more threat to the UTV Live branding for the news programme than the changes in 2020 did.

If ITV News presentation is updated next year, there may be an opportunity to revisit the title of the NI news programme then. But it's no more of an anomaly than the old regional ITV company names that survive in news programme titles in England.

One small element of UTV branding that survived the 2020 change to ITV presentation is the logo on endboards for local trails. UTV-branded local trails have not yet materialised today. But in the grand scheme of things, even if the UTV branding disappears on local trails, how many viewers will notice/care?

The more I get a feel for it, the more I feel like we’re in a sort of 2006 scenario. The only thing that’s really going for it are the animations and promo end caps that look reasonably clean - everything else is just so resoundingly meh. I appreciate how modern it is but it’s all very (which I get why they did it) streaming service-y which most doesn’t work when you’re trying to sell a channel’s personality. I don’t think many of the elements of the rebrand are going to last very long.

I still can’t believe that ITV1 logo is real… The amount of people that number would’ve gone through and been approved by is dizzying. It just looks so awkward, it doesn’t even look properly like the 1’s in the logo animation which makes it even more confusing… why? They didn’t need to touch the original 1 from the typeface, why give it that awkward slope? It looks like the Loch Ness monster. Or a duck. Or a horrible mess slapped together in Illustrator…

I think there is a subtle but not unimportant distinction between the main branding being ITV, the name of both a channel in England/Wales/Border _and_ a network (U.K.-wide for decades), with UTV, the local channel name only being referenced at local programming, to ITV1 being the name of the channel full stop with UTV relegated to the same status as ‘Granada’. What’s the name of the channel on the EPG these days?

ITV is a familiar brand across the U.K. as the name of the network for decades (as well as ITB News etc), but ITV1 as a channel name hasn’t been used before outside England/Wales/Border. That’s changed in Northern Ireland (and Scotland during breakfast hours) as of today.

Honestly, I think everything I've seen of this rebrand looks awful. There's nothing that I've seen as an improvement on what went before it! I have personally always sat on the 'ITV' side vs. 'ITV1', but all of the surrounding branding just looks like a poor mock.

The numerals look out of place, the colours look ugly and uninspired, and the animations look amateurish.

I don't get how any of this was approved. I personally thought the slates fit the main channel well, and ITV2's loud teal branding still looked as fresh as when it was introduced. I just can't help but think there must have been a better and more strategic way to tie things together ahead of the ITVX launch, rather than throw away a load of solid branding and presentation and replace it with a high school powerpoint presentation.

I feel like ITV and Channel Four have focussed so much on their presentation looking different (to what they’ve had before and to anyone else’s)  that they’ve forgotten to make it look nice.

Channel 5’s presentation isn’t cutting edge or ground breaking… but it is pleasing on the eye. BBC 2 is a delight, as per. BBC One looks like BBC One again with its centred circle.

It’s disappointing frankly.

RE: ITV Channel Brand Refresh (15th November and Beyond) - Mixdown - 15-11-2022

I initially held back this morning on posting my thoughts on this rebrand but so many others seem to have shared my sentiment.

This is a massive step down from ITV Creates. There was something very old school about that, in that it was quite artistically driven and the logo was the centrepiece of the ident. Now we are back to ITV1, the tackiness from that era has somewhat returned with it, and I agree what others have said about it feels like 2006 - in particular the original package that was so bad it didn't even last a year. ITV1 as a channel logo is now an afterthought on top of whatever bland, generic footage they have come up with, that says nothing at all about the channel. We have been there and done that when it comes to live action idents. One problem with showing people is that as fashions change, the footage dates very quickly.

Allegedly nobody watches linear TV anymore and the concept of such a thing is on its way out. It seems the art form of channel identity is sadly following it out the door. ITVX is the favourite child now, and it seems they are now running down the legacy channels at the behest of it.

On a channel that was branded ITV (and now ITV 1) 99.99% of the time.

Is there any particular reason why they don't just change the name on the guides to ITV 1? I know the regional news there is still called UTV Live, but Wales managed all right with HTV News on ITV1 Wales 20 years ago. I suspect there may be some internal politics at play?
