I'd say it's a bit more than a rumour. New Who has been renamed on iPlayer as Doctor Who (2005-2022), which would suggest they're going for something along these lines. It wouldn't be surprising, there's a view that numbers as high as 'Series 14' are a bit cumbersome for attracting new viewers on streaming, which is presumably what they're targetting internationally.

Nu-Who only appears with the years on the web version of the iPlayer group / collection page. On the app and when you go through to the show, it's still just Doctor Who. Splitting series 14 into a new show would break all the iPlayer favourites and notifications etc they've built up over the years.

Since the 2005 reboot, the term season has been used more and more, probably down to the increase viewing in the US.

Actually there has - he's interviewed in today's new issue of SFX.
This trailer aired before the News at Six.

I think these are the quotes from the interview that are being circulated. Not sure how accurate these are, or how truthful Russell is being (I think he would be well aware this would get a lot of people talking, whether this is what it will be called universaly or only by Disney or something).

I'm calling it Season 40. It's the same show, for crying out loud. Season 26 was in 1989, Season 27 started in 2005.

Thanks for saving me a job. Like I said, it's mentioned in an interview in SFX magazine, an extract of which is in those tweets. Somehow they managed to scoop the internet, and the official Doctor Who Magazine, with several interviews (one with RTD, one with David Tennant, and one with the various actors involved in Tales of the Tardis). Even subscribers didn't get their copies early.

If the BBC plan to go back to it being Series 1 for RTD new era, I think this is a bad PR move - we don't need a third era of this show

A Simpsons Kang & Kudos quote springs to mind... "Just because it looks like season 4 doesn't make it season 4".
