Christian Fraser has stayed on air on the News Channel, but then handed over to Outside Source which was in full flow. Perfectly acceptable in my view. So long as this sort of coverage continues, I’ll be happy.
Also the fact that this is the kind of story they're willing to break into schedules for now, before the new breaking team is in operation, bodes pretty well in terms of how frequent the future opt-outs will be. Obviously we have to wait to see how it works in practice, but certainly a good few signs recently that the channel will err more towards 'not crap' than the other options.

Christian Fraser is standing by in Studio E tonight. He popped up straight after News at Six to tell the viewers they're expecting a press conference from the Sussex Police, then handed over to Sportsday 3 mins later:
Is this an indication of how breaking news will be handled in the UK feed in the future? Who knows...
I was surprised to see Christian as he’s not on air until 9pm. The breaking news was handled really well I thought. Let’s hope that continues.
Wouldn't exactly call it odd. It's what should be happening. He will have been in for several hours before 9pm, so it makes sense for him to break the news if he's there.

Only thing I worry about is how much space/airtime there will be to add depth/context to evolving stories. If you have to interrupt the weather and later rejoin other programs already in progress, how jumbled up is the output going to get? Are we just going to get little pieces of every story but never anything more? I mean what do we lose from the programs we re-join?
You could certainly introduce a press conference with just a voice off screen, but then you're relying on that press conference to actually be giving audiences the full story and not relying on your presenter to ultimately contextualize/fact check the news. Not all subject matter speaks the truth for itself to the audience so you do sometimes need room for presenters to provide depth.
I did like the breaking news sting. Would they rerun the weather report in full later? That's the kind of segment where it probably really irritates some of the domestic audience to interrupt.

They got wind of the press conference during Daniel Sanford's live on the Six. They knew it was coming so they had plenty of warning to get Christian set up in E.
I can't see how this will be how it plays out usually.

News conference at 1858 and when that coverage ended around 1903 it hot-switched to outside source.

That’s not great. Martine would make a good replacement for Dermot on Sky.

The news conference was indeed well-handled and going to Sportsday was a good call. Can see some grumblings online from people who saw the news after the event on phone notifications and tuned in only to see reports on the Nigerian election and Israeli politics. All entirely the right things for World to be covering, and there's nothing more to say about the sad news announced other than what was in the statement, but of course rolling news is something people tune into at any moment.
A good sign that things will be handled as elegantly as possible when there is news that there is some degree of warning for like news conferences and court judgements, but I'm sure Sky News will be gaining viewers from these changes.

Has Tim Willcox presented his final shift?
He still has “Chief Presenter for BBC News” as his Twitter bio. Although to be fair he doesn’t seem to be a big user of Twitter.
