It was interesting to see the Reporting Scotland studio in an 'obit mode' when reporting the passing of Alistair Darling last night:

That's awfully stark. A dark texture (e.g. grey/black silk) would lift the flat background - especially on the close ups. Makes it more look like the screens are broken.

The Scotland version of the regional set appears far too big and stark IMO. They could bring the monolith forward a little and add a couple of chairs with a small coffee table to the left as a softer setup which could fill the gap nicely and complement standing at the desk.
Just something to fill the gap! Reminds me of Lorraine commenting on the last set she had at TLS that it was quite stark and looked like she’d been robbed…!

I know the standard (English) regional version of the set is fairly basic, but it works for the size it is; extending it over a larger space, as per Scotland, just looks empty and half-complete in comparison - almost like a few frames before the end of a set install timelapse, before they've added the furniture. Just feels like a missed opportunity, especially considering the main Salford set shows there's plenty of room to get creative with the original Studio B elements.

Would love to know the cost of those screens. There's no need to have such a huge studio but if they can justify that, a sofa in the corner wouldn't have gone a miss.

Looking at the BBC Breakfast studio in action, I think doing something with the floor (similar to the ‘flat’ catwalk) and featuring the backlit ‘grid’ that’s also present in Studio B somewhere would help to break up the screens and add some warmth. It would also have been cheaper surely to have one long screen along the ‘back’ of the studio, but adding some different elements to the sides of the studio.
The benefit to the design they’ve picked is that these sets won’t really age as such, as there’s not anything in them that could! These sets should last each region a fair few years now, but the downside is that they just look far too sparse in comparison to the Breakfast studio and Studio B.
