I checked on lyngsat.com, looks like it's gone

Used to be a good way of watching the Superbowl with adverts if I remember. It left 15w last year I beleive.

I've finally got round to watching that CBS clip and noticed the description saying that it was the continuation of a feed of something else. It also mentions that it was in PAL rather than NTSC, so converted at source.

As for receiving US TV today, if it was possible over the air (as the BBC was in the other direction in the early days) one issue would be having something to receive it - I don't think there's much that will be able to use an ATSC signal here

You can tell how much that is a product of its time with the Rolf Harris promo.

What does that say about a channel if it scares fish? Just talk me through that.

So it's now been discovered that it was Blade and not Paint the last ever 2s ident (the original run), although given that shortly before Blade, the start of the Learning Zone ident appeared makes me wonder if Blade's appearance was a cockup........

Been known for a while looking back at this Spanish pres site!

A shame the Real Player links no longer work.

I would question whether Blade was meant to be the final ident. Its clear to say from the clip somebody's pressed the wrong button (or screwed up the playout list order) and we should be looking at this:

Depends if you technically count Blade in that context as in "an ident" that was meant to be there. I doubt it. The Learning Zone at that time had its own separate presentation wise from BBC Two. Before 1997 it was wrapped around BBC Two presentation.

I would agree, especially since the ident doesn't actually play out correctly! I don't know that a still image of the ident can really be qualified as a "final ident".

They used to keep a still of an ident on one of the still store* outputs just in case it was needed.**

My guess is that that was meant to be a Learning Zone menu but either it didn't load the menu into the output of the stills store, or somehow the menu was in one output and it cut to the other.

Incidently, the oft suggested idea that 'someone pressed the wrong button' - thafs not really how playout has worked for a long long while. You only really have a couple of buttons, and they're not used that often. Any issues are normally either something failing to work or the wrong thing entered into a computer

*basically a caption generator that holds lots of captions - the equivalent of slides in the old days

**and of course as we saw earlier that year, when there was as royal death)
