It’ll be alright on the night, not quite…

The uploader has added this clip to their channel now from the commercial break to the same episode. There are no bumpers each side of the break, and at the start of the second part you can hear the director before the scene starts. It certainly looks like they were given an unfinished edit of the episode, or at least something that wasn’t double checked prior to TX.

You'd think someone would have definitely realised something was wrong at the end of part one there, though I guess possibly by then they wouldn't have had enough time to find the correct tape and get it ready in time for part two, so just had to stick with that tape.

That's bizarre. Is it credible that there was an unfinished version lying around in addition to the correct one?

Line cuts or initial assemblies of the show are likely to exist for studio sitcoms, which are then edited down with the correct takes, but they would have 'everything' as mixed in the gallery at the time of recording, they wouldn't be short like this.
It's the idea that it would have been picked out of the library, spun up and no-one actually checked the timings at all that is strange to me

Be interested to know if the title sequence was properly attatched to the start of the episode as well.

Was this shown in the LWT area only, or was it shown by other ITV companies, either as a network transmission by LWT, or at a different time by other regions? If the latter, be interesting to know what edit they were given?

I've shown the two videos to a friend, who isn't into TV pres, and he has this theory. Could it have been, that, for some reason, in that episode, the studio scenes were being broadcast live, and the external shots, and perhaps a couple of studio scenes, were pre recorded, and played in live at the time of transmission, as opposed to the whole programme being pre recorded?

Almost certainly not - while there have been some interesting mixes of external and live/VT contributions in shows, that would be massively elaborate for a show like this. My pet theory is a mixup at the editing stage (possibly due to changing between edit suites or physical editors) has led to different parties misidentifying this tape as the finished article.

I also noticed the abrupt ending to part one, where she was saying something and the screen went blank before she finished. So, perhaps part one was not a finished article tape as well.

It was networked by LWT at 22.00 on Sunday evenings.
