It was originally a globe - a spherical or rounded object.
That does seem to suggest my suspicion that 'cake' was a modern day name and not used by Central themselves. As you say it's not like a cake

A compilation of BBC closedowns from the 1980s when the clock went forwards or backwards.
They don't all entirely go to plan.

Slightly deviating from the archives, a great 2-part documentary on a wild breakfast show experiment on FX/Fox in US, with the original hosts' approval:

Not just a pretend announcer but Professor Stanley Unwin. That sort of language was his act

A 1973 commercial break on Ulster Television. Interesting for a few reasons - the government warnings related to the Troubles (toy guns, unattended vehicles, confidential helplines), a (somewhat sexist these days) appeal for trainee prison officers, a black and white ad, and the cheap and partially cheerful VO/slide ads accompanied by cheesy music. I’m assuming the latter were voiced live, possibly by the duty CA, as he stumbles over a telephone number?

I do find that ad break fascinating because it feels like one from 5-7 years earlier than the 1973 mentioned.

It’s not, she didn’t look like that then.
She looked like this.

And she apparently only moved to Manchester in the 80s, so if anything she’d sound more Northern now.
