American News Presentation

Here's the 3pm open. The 3pm and 6pm broadcasts retain their formats, anchors and branding established at the start of the fall season, as these hours became solo anchor-led and reformatted to make them closer to the CBS Evening News, which KPIX airs in both the East Coast and West Coast versions, and which follows both newscasts.

Worth nothing that these shows have been using temporary opens during the initial months on air, as the new O&O package was not ready. These opens, although using elements of the new branding, they used a cut of CBS Local (the Stephen Arnold Music version of CBS Enforcer made for the Nexstar-owned CBS affiliates).

The other shows have been also renamed, dropping exact times in favour of dayparts, mainly to facilitate rebroadcasting in their local streaming network and also align it (as the new graphics and naming do) to the jukebox style of the CBS News Streaming Network. They also retain their "The Minute" updates when regular shows are not on air.

Personally, I quite like the new graphics and music. The 2015 graphics (designed by Rey Rodriguez/Linear Drift) were really starting to look really dated on air and didn't look quite in line with the work of many of the station's own creations. Still, it managed to survive an incredible seven years in use. Fortunately, the new graphics spell the end of this disaster and the station will now have a much bigger kit of creative elements to use for its promotional and creative efforts.

And yes, as you heard, it spelled the end for the Enforcer theme as we know it. The new theme has the new mnemonic from Antfood, which further makes the gap between local and national CBS News much closer. KPIX is the first station to get the O&O package in a soft launch status, with the rest of the O&Os having them next year (in time with the launch of CBS News Detroit and the long delayed KCAL morning news).

I really like the CBS mnemonic. The rest of the theme is ok-ish. It will be sad to see the original WBBM Chicago theme called "Chicago My Home" renamed CBS Enforcer, finally bow out after decades of use.

The First Alert Weather/Next Weather graphics used since 2019 have been unchanged; although it still uses Gotham, it fits the overall graphics:

As part of the KPIX relaunch, their 11pm news has a new looser, more informal format. As part of the changes, former midday and 5pm anchor Sara Donchey is now at the helm of the show, with Elizabeth Cook taking her place with Ryan Yamamoto in these shows.

The morning broadcasts, as expected, have been aligned with CBS Mornings:

I like the new music , using the CBS 5-note signature is pretty nice . Very NBC like. They made the streaming channel and over the air have the same matching graphics so they aren't a strange mismash. I do think they are too much on screen, lots of local news taken the idea of cable news (same with the evening newscasts) and just having stuff on the screen all over the place. I will mention that really only WBBM, WCBS, and kind of KCBS have any big connection to the enforcer theme. The stations that ended up being owned by CBS from Westinghouse like KPIX , or the one that was owned by NBC (KCNC denver) don't. KCNC didn't even use the theme until 2011

This video shows a great example of the new music since it has a longer headline sequence and etc.

What I've noticed, well what we've seen from KPIX so far, is the opening segments are brilliant and full of energy. They seem to actually have a produced opening segment. No boring locked down camera's or endless B-Roll. There is movement and theme in the background and the use of the videowalls.... gives it a bigger network quality feel. It will be interesting to see how this is implemented at the other CBS O&Os

The new KPIX newscast format and anchor shuffle happened several months ago. The only thing that changed this week was the branding and graphics. I'm not sure how much the newscast format is driven by national or local decisions – I think it's actually the latter. So I wouldn't count on other CBS O&Os doing quite the same thing.

What they're doing I think is actually very interesting. They've made Juliette Goodrich the main anchor and have been running promos that try to show her and her newscasts as local complements to Norah O'Donnell. Juliette is one of the few remaining legacy faces and is quite popular, but she's long been only on weekends, supposedly by her choice. I guess she preferred that over the chaos of the normal Monday-Friday.

The problem with KPIX is that they go through different formats and anchor lineups all the time. They have no established identity, and their ratings have suffered as a result for years. This most recent change at least feels drastic enough that I think they might stick with it for a while. Their early evening ratings have pulled up a little bit, but they still struggle late at night and are dead last in the morning.

It is happening tonight. Jim Gardner is retiring from WPVI.

In preparation for this, the block surrounding WPVI's studio building over Monument Road has been renamed Jim Gardner Way...

And the Action News studio has also been named in honor of the retiring anchor...

Even Philly and suburb residents have decided to tailgate the long-tenured anchor, leading to Gardner being escorted by police before arriving at WPVI, where the residents were able to greet him in person.

I love that WPVI offered food for the fans who are outside the studio complex to wish Jim off.

Jim Gardner is up there with well known UK regional news anchors like Fred Dinenage and the late Harry Gration who became part of the fabric of their home markets.

So it's official, the Action News theme has now lasted longer than their main anchor.
