BBC News Pres: 2022 - Present

To have flown to Edinburgh by scheduled air services would have required a flight via Amsterdam yesterday. Getting to Scotland by air from Cardiff is virtually impossible these days, unless private.

Ironically, there is a flight from Cardiff to Edinburgh today. Late afternoon.

Yes, Huw would've likely had to get the train to London and then fly from London if he was flying to Edinburgh yesterday. Literally it was a case of him being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I don't see why Reeta couldn't have done the 6 and 10. But then I also don't see why Huw, Reeta and Chris Mason all needed to be sent to Holyrood anyway. I don't personally see what presenting from outside a darkened Scottish Parliament in the dark added to the bulletin when they have a fantastic studio in NBH to do the bulletin from.

I'm hardly a fan of sending anchors to a location unless it serves a purpose. That being said... I think yesterday's decision may have been driven as much by 'political' factors as much as the need to be on the scene. Rightly or wrongly, the BBC has been criticised by the SNP for the way in which it represents Scotland. In some ways, sending the 'face' of the Corporation's news output to Scotland to report on the resignation was an... easy win. It removed an avenue for criticism by demonstrating a level of respect towards Scottish institutions (not least of all because of the impact they've had on British politics over the past two decades).

I think that's right.

What's more, it's also worth baring in mind that Chris, and to a degree Rita and Huw, will also want to be on the ground and speaking to people. Producers, for sure, will do a lot of the leg work for the presenters but they'll still want to put in a word with contacts and see it 'on the ground', so to speak.

Also worth remembering that I believe a historic criticism of political coverage is it being London centric so sending the political editor is a sign they understand the works outside Westminster

Presume C was getting maintenance as it is the usual overnight studio.
IIRC, studio E is had been used for overnights once a week for a long time and it's usually mid week.

Thanks for letting me know, just caught my eye as odd to be using that studio late at night these days.

Some interesting design decisions in this tweet:
twitter.com

[*]Both old and new versions of the BBC News logos
[*]The new all-Reith logo features 'BBC' lettering that appears slightly too thin, while the 'NEWS' text appears unusually heavy
[*]And for no reason at all, someone then added a weird 'BBC NEWS BREAKING' graphic at the bottom - using the old logo - which looks like a really poor mock-up of the BBC News lower-thirds.

Looking through the @BBCBreaking Twitter feed (which itself inexplicably still uses the old Gill/Reith interim logo), it doesn't look like this style of tweet has been used before, so one can only wonder why this mess appeared today. (And one can only hope it never appears again.)

They've added a stroke around the BBC News logo at the top, and it looks dreadful.

I wouldn't be surprised if these tweets and images are automatically generated and someone applied a new automation on top of the old automation (or vice versa)

Seems like the NC are testing out new things this hour... All of the breaking headlines at the 1700 bulletin are labeled "LATEST" and only uses a one-liner "Outside Source styled" headline:

At least change the color of the lower third to blue or something... Whatever color that is not too urgent-feel

From what they said on 5 Live breakfast yesterday, Chris Mason was on holiday in Edinburgh with his family, when the story broke and they asked him to break into his time off to help cover it.
