how do those cable companies do it? Satellite presumably, but do they just all use the London / England feed or do the BBC let them use whatever region they want

BBC One London, Two England and Four are all on 10773 H. That means the 13th Febuary might be the date this transponder is converted to DVB-S2.
(The Dutch providers usually use London for BBC1SD, the "red slide of death" England-Version for BBC1HD and England for BBC2)

Incidentially TotaalTV is also claiming "BBC One London HD" will be available on 10818 V from the 13th Febuary and that BBC Four/CBeebies will move to that frequency as well. Currently that transponder hosts BBC Three, the News Channel, One and Two Northern Ireland and a handfull of english BBC1 regions in SD.

A bit of an off-topic question, but why BBC domestic channels are being carried in Dutch cable operators and satellite transponders?

The current situation with BBC channels in the Netherlands (and Blegium as well) has developed over time. You always could get the BBC along the Dutch and Belgian coast, though reception was dependent on conditions. When the first cable operators came up the build a relay in Zeebrugge (Belgium) to offer BBC channels throughout the Benelux-Region.

These days there is an official agreement with BBC Studios to carry the channels and they also pay for the privilege. Under this agreement the cable operators are also required to block all programs to which the rights conflict with a local broadcaster (mostly sport like the Olympics, World Cup, Euros etc.).

Also today these providers do mostly just take the signal from satellite. Hence the warning to them from the BBC about the discontinuation of SD.

Switzerland also has BBC domestic channels on cable and IPTV providers, as Swiss law allows rebroadcast of FTA signals from other countries received in Switzerland.

Some providers have carriage arrangements with BBC Studios, while others take advantage of the loophole.

Most provide BBC One HD with BBC One London SD as a back up.

Curious if they've been told not use them at all, there's no technical reason why they still won't be able to get the channels in SD for a while except that they'll move around a bit before settling in their 'nightlight' home.

Mind you the Dutch article doesn't actually say that

The BBC services have been in the Low Countries cable system since the 1980s at least .. they were received off air from Dover ....by the Calais relay and the fed by land line to the head ends .
The BBC got lots of money for this ..but very nearly lost it when the SE region was formed as the local news was not London !!. Thus Dover not CP had the largest number of viewers fur quite a few years

But the digital age meant that the head ends could recieve DSAT London andthus all BBC domestic tv but not news channel and the radio services are now available in the Low Countries on cable .
(I thing Swiss was a similar idea in digital age) and even more money goes to BBC worldwide

Rights are covered by SER as defined in

I wonder how this will affect 27.5w which shows a range of bbc services in SD as well as HD.
