Presumably the closure of the Cambridge and Oxford regional news editions essentially frees up two BBC One SD spaces, allowing for a single BBC One SD feed to then be added in January.

The closure of Oxford and Cambridge doesn't affect what happens with the SD services as there'll only be one BBC One SD. The 'nightlight' SD services will be on their own transponder

Their closures does give a bit more bandwidth for the HD replacements though

Nightlight is a phrase and concept used during the US's digital switchover. Certain TV stations stayed on air on analogue with information about digital receivers and helpline details

I didn't realise the English regional migrations were starting as soon as next month.

Hopefully the first to migrate will be those that have had their HD facilities up and running the longest: namely London, Salford and Plymouth. Big Grin

I'm wondering how these will be displayed on the EPG.  Sky+HD have limited space available, so "BBC One SW HD" fits in, but "BBC One NE&C HD"  or "BBC One Yk&Li HD" would struggle.  They can't all just be called "BBC One HD", because you wouldn't know one region from another when looking through the EPG at 950+.

One simple way to do it would be to style BBC One as BBC 1 in these limited spaces:

BBC 1 Yk&Li HD as opposed to
BBC One Yk&Li HD

Of course, some bright day in the future the HD denominator won’t be needed anymore… maybe then they’ll have to add SD to the few remaining channels.

They will probably keep HD suffix until simulcast ends. Then there will be no need.

Likely to stay as it is until 2024 I reckon.

They briefly changed it to 'BBC1 xxxx' when the English SD regions first appeared on DSat. It looked messy when all the other BBC channels used a word rather than a numeral.

That inconsistency set off my OCD.   Dodgy

It didn't last long before they changed to what we have now.

I agree that it would be ideal to ditch the HD tag, but then it would look inferior to the other PSBs at the top of the EPG who still use it. Of course, ITV1 don't use regional names, but they're not required to have all of them in the EPG. You have to add them under 'Other Channels' and they're all just called 'ITV1'.

If there’s someone on here with Sky Glass, they can probably tell us what the BBC One HD regions are called on the EPG.

They had 'BBC One'not 'BBC1' and are the same as existing 954-968 with 'HD' afterwards.

Virgin did a lot of this swapping over in the nations at the same time as BBC Scotland launched. BBC One SD disappeared from TiVo and BBC One HD moved to 101 (with BBC Scotland being on 108).

It made a right mess. Not least because virgin doesn't recognise BBC Two Scotland HD (old) and BBC Two HD (new) as the same channel. And then after six months refused to play things recorded off those channels.

Also I believe there is less interest in a Mocks forum on here because the people from Mock Designs all work at virgin making clandestine bodges of the channel branding for their EPG.

I can't remember off the top of my head if Virgin killed off their SD boxes entirely a few years back replacing any that weren't TiVo / TiVo V6 with a V HD box.
