Miserable is white walls and suspended ceilings of traditional office space. That's why office buildings that look like that are getting left vacant on the market more.
Central Square has lots of texture, shades and colour pops, and inside it feels very appropriate for a media organisation. The few times I've been in its always been pleasant, although chronically underused.
Don't be fooled by the Wales Today newsroom view, that just bad staging that doesn't work, mainly because the lighting levals and screens require camera racking that's not really compatible with the exposure setting required to make that office view pop on screen. The human eye view is much more appealing

Not having been in the building, I'm happy to bow to your superior, first-hand knowledge, and I'm glad to hear it's a pleasant place to work.
I would say though, for somewhere which many more people will see on TV than will ever see in person, if it doesn't look great on screen, that strikes me as something of a failure. And not just the newsroom view – when the Ten has been presented from there it's looked desperately gloomy.

Technical issue on the current report on Wales Today's lunchtime bulletin. During the report on school calendar reform, the studio audio was kept on, with Lucy Owen (and an off-mic Derek Brockway) complaining of a loss of talkback.
It sounded like Lucy disconnected something or dropped something as well; thankfully her exclamation was "oh hell" rather than anything more sweary! No acknowledgement during the final few minutes of the bulletin, and thankfully humorous rather than anything more.

I thought Wales Today looked quite smart when they first moved to Central Square but now it just looks.. messy? It’s quite jarring how they’ll sweep across the dark-looking set (which looks alright) and cut to a shot of a rather dated-looking brighter newsroom which doesn’t seem to match the rest of the look.

BBC Wales Live using the BBC Millbank studio tonight. Looks quite nice.

A bit less of an eye-ache than the background currently used at Central Square. The Westminster set-up taking inspiration from the graphics/logo rather than the Cardiff background.

I always thought the black floors make the studios look darker. I always thought when they had the wood effect flooring that it made the studios look brighter and warmer.

Well, of course, they do. But they are more expensive and difficult to both install and maintain, while also requiring different lighting to ensure they look decent (which, considering good lighting directors seem to be critically endangered, is a real mark against them).

I remember by the time the original studio in the forum was ready to be updated the wood floor looked awful. Never thought of the lighting. I do prefer the black to that awful grey they use.

That does look very nice.
Since the demise of most of BBC Parliament's programmes such as
'Today in Parliament' and also BBC One's
'This Week' many years ago, the studio at Millbank seems to be quite underused despite its obvious versatility. It seems like a wasted resource, although it was used for the recent by-elections.
Sky News has a similar space in the same building but they seem to make maximum use of theirs and are even tinkering to improve it again.
