Gladiators re-revival

I've found the files I got off YouTube years ago (back in 2018 as it turns out):

One clean Eliminator theme:

Further to the discussion which may help to ID which of the listed CDs these came from (I think its the original 1992 CD) as I don't think it was mentioned in the now non-existant uploads, here's a longer edit version of the music from Duel, a game that only ran for up to 30 seconds but the music is nearly two minutes long, with a whole extra middle section:

(don't think I'm breaking any forum rules here as the whole soundtrack for the first series of the show was commercially released back in the day anyway!)

It's impossible to not hear John Anderson shouting '3! 2! 1!' during the opening of the Duel track soundtrack.

For those interested I really recommend the recent GladPod podcast interview with Muff Murfin who composed all the music for the original series.

Those tracks are awesome, and are as much part of Gladiators for me as the main theme.

The Eliminator especially is really lacking without it.

For anyone that wants to hear the event themes from the original CD, have a listen to the below:

00:00 Duel
1:49 The wall
03:45 Atlaspheres
5:26 Danger Zone
7:32 Hang Tough
9:28 Swingshot
11:13 Eliminator

Well based on those excerpts they were absolutely right to ditch them for the revival - they are incredibly dated.

And that's a problem, why? The same is true of Coronation Street's theme tune (which hasn't changed since it launched in 1960), right? Besides, if music being dated was a problem, nobody would listen to stuff not currently in the charts. It doesn't matter if it isn't up to date, what matters is that the music fits in with the rest of the soundtrack - like the main Gladiators theme and Another One Bites The Dust. And that's the main complaint about the new tunes from what I've seen, people are complaining that they don't fit.

Of course, even if they did keep the original themes, only four out of seven could've been used anyway, as the Atlaspheres, Danger Zone, and Swingshot events haven't been used.

Some themes are timeless, others are of their time. These for me are the latter - very much remind me of nineties video games.

The one comment that stood out for me when the series premiered a couple of weeks ago is how it felt like a new show for 2024, not a revival - and I think reusing this music, certainly in it's original form, would have meant that wasn't quite true. I think the producers need to be credited with knowing where to lean into the nostalgia and where to make changes for a 2024 audience.

They could have done something that is at least memorable during the events. Nobody would ever recall these 20 years later unlike the originals.

But its just a slight criticism, its not that big a priority.

No new events tonight that weren't on the first two episodes. Wolf got a shout out - one of the female contestants had a crush on him as a kid.
Viper got what he deserved in Duel - after knocking the contestant off before the countdown had finished, he was warned to wait next time, and the contestant took him out in two blows! Another villain might have emerged in Gauntlet, which saw one Gladiator disqualified for holding onto the contestant, and another shove the contestant right back to the start (he still got given six points though).

One could argue the theme tune is dated (I always thought the heavy guitar and power ballad vocals made it feel more 80s than early 90s) but it clearly hasn't stopped it from getting reused!

Admittedly, I don't think they picked the best tracks for that CD. Despite their nostalgic status, Hang Tough is the only one I can listen to as a piece of music on its own merit.
