Very common for primary debates. Very unusual for the general election.
This bypasses the usual presidential debate commission entirely and will perhaps kill it off. That org has only existed since 1988. Both Trump and Biden have issues with it…. So they were more than happy to ditch it. If you want more info, some articles go into why people don’t like the commission.
But also — more and more states have adopted early voting. The debates really should be earlier and the presidential debate commission wouldn’t do it.
