I do think the reuse of the 90s idents from their 50th birthday onwards somewhat tarnished their legacy. I'm not sure the original set has aged that well too, though arguably it was the later additions which cemented the 2s as a presentation icon anyway.

Hmm — not sure — think the earlier 90s idents have to be seen in the context of how they were introduced. They're a bit more restrained compared to the later ones, a bit simpler, made with access to less developed technologies than their 97 and 00 contemporaries, and cleave more strongly to the signature colour palette.

In ones like 'Glass' and 'Paper Cut-Out' and 'Shadow' nothing much really happens, you could argue they're a bit dull... but it's still a hell of a lot more than the single 'TWO' symbol that had been previously used! And they did help to bolster the quantity of idents anyway, keeping them more fresh.

The simpler twos built the foundation for the likes of 'Dog' and 'Zapper' to follow. You probably couldn't have cut straight to the wacky stuff.

I do agree they honed the concept over time though. The idents introduced in 1992 and 1993 - 'Optics', 'Powder', 'Dog', 'Car', 'Balloon' - I think all instantly became some of the strongest of the set.

Of the originals, 'Paint' and 'Silk' are iconic, and I do very much like 'Copper Sparks' and 'Garden'. 'Water' and 'Blade' do rather less for me.
